If someone from ancient Rome suddenly appeared among us, what would be the hardest thing to explain to him?

in history β€’Β  7 years agoΒ  (edited)

So, let's make it fun: I'm sending 1 STEEM to up to 10 of you guys that try to explain the most ridiculous thing to that poor Roman. 10 most valuable comments are rewarded! My discretion! 😎

The Roman Empire was founded in 27 BC.

During that period, clothes distinguished the social classes of the people, the mother tongue was Latin, people were entertained by deadly clashes between gladiators and the most profitable market was that of slaves.

Imagine that an ancient Roman suddenly found himself in today's society.
What would be the most complicated thing to explain to him?

Me: "I have this device in my pocket through which I can look at photos of cats and argue aggressively with people I don't even know"

That's actually shameless me with a white towel around my shoulders and the laurel crown I wore at my graduation. Yeah, that's how we do it... Not the towel, the crown thing.

So, I'm curious to know what you guys would try to explain to an ancient Roman. Comment below.

Upvotes and Resteems would be much appreciated! ✌✌

The ancient romans were cool with technology (they had inherited lots of it from the Greeks like astrolabes etc).

I think the thing that would puzzle them the most is womens rights and women leaders. (The ancient Spartans gave a lot of rights to women who ran the economy while the men trained for war, but the Spartans were considered weird by all the other ancient people's).

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Very interesting, didn't think of that! Sending 1 STEEM your way 😊

Unfortunately, that didn't work out so well for them, as there was a very strong correlation between when the men more or less abandoned the government for war and when catastrophic things happened to Sparta. This is perhaps an expected outcome when a theoretically experienced group suddenly delegates critical tasks wholesale to a new group without that same experience.

Sparta liked to conquer more land than they could feasibly keep subjugated.

Probably why the fuck do people push manicured miniature dogs with a pullover in a stroller!

πŸ˜‚ Nice one @blakadder. Sending 1 STEEM your way :)

This is great food for thought. Maybe trying to explain how big the world is. I believe Romans had a pretty limited version of the world back then. Since those ancient time the world has been mapped. Races that never saw each other meet have meet.

Is this still running? I don't see ten steem given out yet. I'll answer anyway because I have a good one.

One of the first things you'd have to explain to him is how to use our bathrooms, especially public ones.

First he'd be pretty confused as to why there were stalls. In ancient Rome public toilets were arranged with several seats in a single room. Going to the bathroom was a social activity. So right off the bat you'd have to tell our Roman time traveler to close the stall and keep conversation to a minimum.

Once in that stall, the Roman would ask where the sponge is. Romans didn't wipe with paper, they used a sponge on a stick. There'd be a trough of running water to wet the sponge and rinse it and a bucket to put it in at the end. So you'd need to explain about toilet paper. If he doesn't like it, assure him that he'll get way fewer anal parasites this way.

Last of all, you'd have to tell him to flush.

An easy answer - bronies.

Hahaha. Well explaining what a My Little Pony convention would surely be a struggle. You earned 1 STEEM buddy, sending it your way!

It would be difficult for Romans to explain that there is a crypto currency))) And now you do not need to have coins in your hands!

I've thought about similar things before. Previously it might have been things like TV and air travel, but the whole concept of the internet would be pretty mind-blowing. We can contact just about anyone in the word with minimal cost. The Romans managed their empire with a fairly small team of people even without fast communications. They were are smart as us.

That our drugs are MUCH better than theirs.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

That wouldn't be easy to explain actually. Romans were hard drug abusers! πŸ˜„

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

That's what I'm saying, son!

Roman: "Does thou have any drugs?"
Modern man: "Killer Kush, bra. Maui Wowie"
Roman after toking: "By the beard of Zeus!"

Karma is real. I think I love you @enazwahsdarb. πŸ˜„

It is very much Karma. Sorry if it's not 10x like they say comes around, but it's the concept of giving and receiving :) I think that is why this platform is going to do so well too. It creates a very friendly, loving vibe of simply giving in order to receive :)

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Agreed. I don't care, it could have been 1 cent even yet the gesture is what counts the most. Your way of thinking honors you. Seems like steemit is filling up with really good people.

I totally agree :)

We have an almost magical way of talking to anyone in the world, at any time, instantly. Most people just use it to look at naked women and cats, and the rest just argue. It's fantastic!

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

It would probably be hard to explain to them why we keep working like slaves and destroying the environment when we possess all the technology we do now.

this is genius, the picture was everything. i'll be honest, i don't know how i would even start, maybe ask how he got here for a start? ;)

That with the exception of the Catholics, Rome no longer rules anyone.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

I would be like "You know how you guys had slaves in your time? Well in today's time, it's all reversed (With a big smile on my face). Today, we have the opportunity to be slaves to something called 'Facebook' and 'Instagram'!!!"

Then he will be like "that's dumb.."

And then I'd be like "Yeah I know, but the inventor is a genius! His name is Mr. Zuckerberg and he tricked everyone into getting addicted to something that makes him rich!! Everyone is a slave to him and they enjoy it!!"

And then the Roman will be like "Show me this 'Facebook'.."

And then I will tell him he can have a choice to be a either a slave or an Ancient Roman.. He can use Facebook and be a slave..

Or he can use an Ancient Roman concept called Steemit where he can dominate the slaves xD

And then he'll be like "HELL YEAH!"

LOL how did you find my story? :P

Liked it my friend! Sending you 1 STEEM just about now πŸ˜„

Haha thanks my man! I appreciate that :) I like the effort you are putting into your content to grow yourself :) I will give you a follow! And I will send you a tip to help you out :) I believe what comes around, goes around.

Thank you my friend. This is Karma! πŸ˜„
I'm following you as well, we have a lot in common !

Great to hear! Let me know what your thoughts are on my last post :) I am having very debatable opinions in the comments section, but after justifying what they are miss-reading, they are understanding haha :P

Can I ask a favor? Could I ask that you resteem my latest post? I need to get 5 resteems for me to reveal the info the the next post :)

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Yep, resteeming with my other account

I actually specifically wanted to see how effective the resteem would be with this account :P But I appreciate that!

I don't think it would be too difficult to explain to them what technology does. How technology works, on the other hand, would be near impossible. Same goes with most science and medicine. Explaining the what would be much, much easier than explaining the how.

I think the hardest thing for them to grasp is the fact that all forms of people are, in most places, equal. Nobody can force another person to do something against their will without potential punishment. There are still social and economic classes, but they all have the same rights. I think the case would be stronger if it was a Roman born into privilege. It would be quite a blow to find out that they are no longer as special as they think they are

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Liked this answer! 1 Steem for ya

That magic isn't real. There's no way they'd believe us once they saw our technology.

hahah, you're getting your reward for this :D Check your wallet!

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I think it would be other way round. He will explain us how technologically challenged society we have become. In their time they had all the technology to build pyramids, Great Wall of China or the hanging garden of Babylon. More importantly, they knew to live a happy, peaceful and lazy life in the midst of nature, everyone's lifestyle was environmentally sustainable and much more constructive than today's. But modern civilization has almost gone bankrupt and is so blind to acknowledge it that they say they have made a huge progress over the Romans! The fact is, they are struggling to reduce their carbon footprint, to gain a consensus on climate change issue, to conserve the forests & wild-life, to devise ways to consume lower energy to travel & communicate etc., etc. After all, complicating lives is not the real technology, simplifying it more than the Roman way of life along with making it comfortable & safe would be termed as some kind of advancement.

Roman would be wise enough to react, "Let these people earn Steem interacting over some inanimate machines, I'd better go on some adventure in the wild and charge up my batteries without any steam". 😜

Hey Roman Guy have you seen a black guy in your community speaking a different language from yours?

Ahah I like this post! I graduated in Roman history, let's get serious now! :D
So, are you referring to the Romans from the Republican age? Or from the imperial age? The first were all about mos maiorum, "no bullshit style"; they probabily wouldn't understand the lack of action and courage in the current Italian society and politics. Moreover, since their constructions are still standing after earthquakes, invasions etc. they would probabily wonder what's wrong with us: so many houses and buildings crumbled like sandcastles in the last period!
