1940 Europe

Swiss intelligence warned Norway regarding evidence of a German intervention, but Norway chose to ignore the warning.

French Prime Minister Reynaud wrote to the British War Cabinet, proposing ideas to undermine any possibility of further Soviet expansion in Scandinavia. British Prime Minister Chamberlain refused to cooperate as he refused to build hostility with the Soviet Union.

1941 Austria

The Yugoslav Prime Minister Cvetkovic and the Foreign Minister Cincar-Markovic sign the Tripartite Pact. The reality of the situation and the influence of German pressure is made only too clear by the cold tone of the occasion. Germany agrees to respect Yugoslav sovereignty and not to demand passage for troops.

In Belgrade, there are disturbances in Belgrade when it becomes known that Yugoslavia has signed the Tripartite Pact.

1942 Burma

The main Japanese offensive against Taungoo,began at 0800 hours, striking northern, western, and southern sides of the city nearly simultaneously. Fierce house-to-house fighting would continue through the night10470929_365013097039959_423804068123088834_n.jpg

1943 North Africa

The British 1st Armored Division nearly reaches the Tebaga Gap by nightfall. The threat from here, combined with the concentration of Americans at Maknassy, causes General von Arnim to withdraw the German and Italian infantry from the Mareth Line.11076178_365012383706697_2869653009672119280_n.png

1944 Eastern Front

Troops of the Soviet 1st Ukrainian Front capture Proskurov and continue advance southwest. The German 1st Panzer Army (General Hube) fails to attack westward and it is threatened with encirclement.

1945 Eastern Front

In East Prussia, Keiligenbeil falls to units of the 3rd Belorussian Front. In Hungary, the Soviet offensive continues with the capture of Esztergom on the Danube River. Just north of the Danube, there are attacks by other elements of 3rd Ukrainian Front.

1945 Western Front

During the day, the various crossings of British 21st Army Group are consolidated into a single bridgehead, 30 miles wide.
Further south, US 1st Army units, principally from US 3rd Corps, begin to break out of the Remagen bridgehead.
The US 8th Corps (part of US 3rd Army) begins to cross the Rhine River near Boppard. To the south, Darmstadt is taken by US 12th Corps units who crossed at Nierstein. Other units have advanced farther east to the Main near Hanau and Aschaffenburg.1899750_365006207040648_5427542420351222663_o.jpg
