Mystery History Pt4a - Lake Monsters and Myths. - Lake Baikal.

in history •  7 years ago

For almost all of known history legends of Lake Monsters have been prevalent around the world. Is there any truth in any of these myths? Sightings go back centuries and stories of mythical lake creatures/monsters are to be found on every continent.
Why is this?

Title Image Source

Could there be any truth in these stories? Or is it all just wild imagination and fakery? With theories ranging from 'long lost dinosaurs' to 'underwater alien bases' there are a plethora of unsubstantiated stories linked to our biggest lakes.

The Loch Ness Monster is a case in point, possibly the most famous of the 'Lake Monster' myths to be found however alleged photographs of the 'beast' such as the one seen here have been shown to have been faked down the years with people speculating that locals have tried to keep the myth going for tourism purposes. Now while this may be true does that mean all the stories and pictures are fake?

Lets move away from Loch Ness and start this series at the world's largest freshwater lake. A place where very interesting myths and legends are to be found.

THE LAKE MONSTERS.

LAKE BAIKAL - RUSSIA.

Lake Baikal is situated in southern Siberia with its claim to fame being that it is the largest freshwater lake (by volume) in the world. So big in fact it contains between 22-23% of the world's fresh surface water, which is more than the North American Great Lakes combined!
Add to that the fact that it is also the world's deepest lake with depths of up to 5387ft (1642m) reached in some parts. It is interestingly considered the world's oldest lake too at 25million years old!

Being deeper and older than all of the other lakes you would expect to see a certain amount of interesting fokelore/myths even from such a barren and desolate part of the world.

This article from MysteriousUniverse.org tells a very interesting story.....

In the southern part of the Russian region of remote, frigid and untamed cold known as Siberia lies a lake unlike any other on Earth. Lying nestled within the rugged Siberian wilderness is the enormous Lake Baikal, the deepest and most ancient lake on the planet, and so renowned for its beauty that it is sometimes referred to as “The Pearl of Russia.” It is a majestic place not only remarkable for its deep water, but also for its deep mysteries, for Lake Baikal has long been the epicenter for a wide variety of weird happenings and high strangeness.

Lake Baikal is a rift lake, meaning it was formed within a deep rift created by tectonic movement along fault lines, and lies in the Russian region of Siberia, between the Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast. At 5,387 feet (1,642 meters) deep and with a surface area of 12,248 square miles (31,722 square kilometers) it is the deepest lake in the world and the seventh largest by surface area. The lake is so large and so deep that it is estimated to hold 20% of the world’s unfrozen fresh water. At an estimated 25 million years old, Lake Baikal is also considered to be the oldest existing lake in the world as well. The lake is known for not only its size, but also its remarkably crystal clear water and biodiversity. Lake Baikal is home to a large variety of species found nowhere else on earth and this rich ecology and biodiversity has earned it the nickname “The Galapagos of Russia,” and helped it to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Considering its remote and wild locale, its enormity, and how ancient it is, it is perhaps no surprise that Lake Baikal has a long history of bizarre events, strange occurrences, legends, myths, and folklore. Some of the earliest stories stretch far back into history to its very creation, with local legend saying that the lake was formed by the impact of a gigantic rock falling from the sky. From there, the lake’s weird history began. Ghengis Khan was said to have been born on the lake’s Olkhon Island, which is the third largest island lake in the world, and there is a legend that Jesus Christ once visited here. Jesus allegedly proclaimed the land north of the lake to be blessed and the land south of it to be of no worth, which is why to this day local folklore says that corn will not grow in these cursed lands south of the lake.

No surprise for me to find stories/myths of Ghengis Khan in this area of the world it was afterall part of his empire however to find a Jesus linked story this far east of the holy land was a surprise to me. I have seen stories from Tibet, India and Nepal regarding visits from the man known to history as Jesus Christ however Siberia is a new one for me. There is much not known regarding the travels of Jesus in the time between boy and manhood. Maybe here is another link in that fractured chain of evidence.
Moving on...

There is a myriad of mysteries to be found at Lake Baikal. One of these is the alleged presence of a mysterious lake monster long feared by locals. The native Buryat people of the region call the creature Lusud-Khan or Usan-Lobson Khan, which translate to “Water Dragon Master,” and it is said to resemble some kind of giant sturgeon, with a prominent snout and armored plating along the back. In modern times, there are occasional reports from fishermen of the elusive creatures breaking the surface or of seeing huge black shapes soaring through the crystal clear water below, but accounts of strange beasts in the lake go back hundreds of years. Early Chinese explorers of the lake, which they called the North Sea, also reported seeing these beasts, which they referred to as “gods of the lake” and “dragon fishes.”

The alleged monsters of Lake Baikal are also represented in ancient petroglyphs found along the Baikal cliffs. There is additionally a large stone stele, a carved stone slab erected as a monument, located on the bank of the Yenisei river near the village Askiz which is estimated to date to between the 3rd and 9th century BC and depicts some sort of mysterious water monster (see below). The image carved into the stone shows a large, lizard-like creature with a forked tongue, wicked claws, and plate-like armor along its back. The bizarre creature is depicted standing upright submerged in water, indicated by the image of a fish hovering nearby. It is unclear what connection this mysterious carving has, if any, to the giant fish-like monsters said to lurk in the lake. The lake is home to many unique species of fish and other animals, including the rare freshwater seal known as the Baikal seal (Pusa sibirica), but there is no known species of creature known to be present here that matches the size of what is reported for the Lake Baikal monster.

The following image was created in order to see the petroglyph carving with later carvings removed.

So what do we have here?
The depiction of a creature that was witnessed at the lake or the imagination of an ancient people?
Maybe academia has it wrong when they assume that all the dinosaurs were extinct by the time modern man appeared, I don't know but something certainly inspired this depiction which is many thousands of years old!

GETTING FREAKY!

Large mysterious lake monsters are not the only things said to haunt Lake Baikal. The area has long been known for its UFO related weirdness as well. There have long been numerous reports of strange lights and alleged alien spacecraft over the lake, but perhaps the most interesting stories come from declassified Soviet era documents compiled on unexplainable incidents by the Russian navy under the command of deputy Navy commander Admiral Nikolay Smirnov. Although the documents are not completely focused on UFOS or even Lake Baikal in particular, the two make regular appearances and the documents mention numerous UFO related incidents and sightings around Lake Baikal nevertheless.

One such account describes how in 1958, a Russian TU-154 plane crashed into the lake’s frigid waters after allegedly being pursued by a UFO. Other reports come from various fishermen, who have seen strange lights hovering over the lake, cruising underwater or even spectacularly erupting from below the waves to shoot into the sky above. People have also reported UFOs rapidly descending from the heavens only to gently alight upon the surface of the lake and float like a boat.

One of the most bizarre accounts related to aliens and UFOs at Lake Baikal allegedly happened in 1982, when navy divers in the lake reported encountering humanoid creatures that were dressed in silvery suits about 164 feet (50 meters) underwater. The report claims that three of the divers were killed when they tried to pursue the creatures and four divers were seriously injured. The Russian government denies that any of the accounts in their documents stem from otherworldly sources and maintains that everything described must have some natural explanation.

Hmmm, I'd be interested to know what the 'natural explanation' for that is!! Government denials are to be expected when an explanation for something weird isn't forthcoming and the Soviet government was the most secretive of governments so it's to be expected sadly.
This story is an incredibly weird and interesting account of an alleged event that occurred over 35 years ago, if you are interested in the full story click here.

The reports of lights and humanoid creatures in Lake Baikal’s depths have, perhaps not surprisingly, led to theories that aliens could have underwater bases here, and there are other bizarre reports of strangeness in the lake that seem to somewhat support this far out notion. In 1977, a deep water submersible called Paysis was involved in scientific research operating at a depth of 1,200 meters in the dark, frigid water. At one point, the vehicle’s spotlight turned off and it was in complete darkness until a sudden bright beam shone upon it from an outside source. The blinding light reportedly remained fixed on the submersible for several seconds before flickering out and once more leaving the sub in cold blackness. It has never been satisfactorily explained what the source of the light was.

There is also an unexplained and powerful magnetic anomaly occurring within a deep part of the lake’s rift, where the tectonic plates pull apart. The anomaly has not been explained and has reportedly suddenly and inexplicably grown in size twice in the past 50 years. Other weird phenomena coming from the depths are reported sudden surges or eruptions of water inexplicably shooting upwards and strange, inexplicable mass fish die offs. These are usually explained as being caused by trapped gasses belching up from the bottom, but the source remains unknown.

Another phenomenon on Lake Baikal that may or may not have anything to do with sea monsters, UFOs, or aliens is the reports of various vessels mysteriously vanishing in its waters. The lake holds many anomalous zones that are particularly known for the disappearance of ships, such as an area on the western shore known as Cape Ryty, an area with so many reported vanishings that the locals consider it to be cursed and to bring sure death upon who ever goes there. The island of Great Ushkan’i, near Cape Sun, as well as the huge island of Olkhon are other cursed zones known for swallowing vessels. Olkhon is known for a place called “The Devil’s Crater,” from where one of the most recent and well known disappearances of a vessel comes.

On June 16, 2011, the pleasure boat Yamaha departed from a village in the Kabansk area of Buryatia with an experienced crew of four to test out a new motor and never returned. It was reported that the crew were all seasoned sailors, yet contact with the vessel was lost shortly after their departure when a sudden fog rolled in. When the fog burned off, the Yamaha was gone. Although the boat was well in range of cellular service, none of the cell phones of the crew could be reached, as if they were completely out of the network. In addition, other than the fog bank, conditions on the lake were said to be placid and perfectly safe for boating at the time, so what happened to the Yamaha and its crew? Nobody knows.

Several extensive search and rescue operations were launched to try and locate the Yamaha, but they turned up no wreckage and not one clue as to the vessel’s fate. It was as if the Yamaha was swallowed by the lake itself. Locals think they know the answer, as it is believed that the area in question occasionally produces horrific sudden whirlpools that appear like a crater upon the surface, hence the name “Devil’s Crater,” and suck in anything unfortunate to be nearby. Local legend says that these mysterious chasms in the water are gateways to hell, through which the souls of sinners pass. Perhaps these whirlpools hold the key to the many missing ships on the lake, but they would not explain the other, more bizarre accounts of ships disappearing for long periods of time only to reappear with crews that claim they have been only gone for a few hours.

Another baffling natural phenomenon on the lake occurred in 2009, when strange, huge circles with diameters of up to 2.7 miles (4.4 km) started to appear in the lake’s ice during particularly cold months. The bizarre circular ice formations were first spotted by astronauts aboard the International Space Station and their discovery immediately ignited speculation as to their cause.

image.jpeg

Of course there was the inevitable theory that the circles were the result of alien activity, but in the end scientists came to a more rational, yet possibly more worrying explanation. It is currently believed that the ice circles are the result of methane gasses gurgling up from the bottom and resulting in swirling warm water currents that then formed the circular formations on the lake ice. The reason this is worrying is that it could indicate that Lake Baikal’s spring ice has been diminishing more rapidly in recent years. When coupled with global warming, this could have disastrous consequences for the lake’s ecosystem and biodiversity, which rely heavily on the lake’s cycles of ice.

This is an interesting mystery as unusually there doesn't seem to be any accusation of fakery with the these giant circles. You'd have to be desperate for attention to try and create a 2.7 mile perfect circle on a frozen lake in the middle of nowhere afterall! I don't personally buy into the 'Man made' global warming meme that is peddled by the MSM in recent years however there is no denying that our climate is changing and anomolies such as this are potentially evidence of a massive methane release, so is definately a concern.

Lake Baikal is truly one of the world’s most beautiful, remote, and amazing lakes. Full of mysteries both natural and perhaps supernatural, it is a vast, deep, yawning chasm of majestic beauty. What are the answers to the enigmas that are here lurking within the crystal clear depths and just beyond our understanding? Is this a place flung far from the familiar world of our current knowledge? Is this a place that sits on some mysterious divide between the realms of what we know, what we think we know, and what we will never know? How deep does the rabbit hole go here at the world’s deepest lake deep in the wilderness of Siberia? Ancient, awe inspiring, mysterious, beautiful, all of these words fit Russia’s Lake Baikal perfectly. Full of deep waters and deep mysteries, Lake Baikal is certainly like no other place on Earth.

I completely agree, it is indeed fascinating and intriguing , however unlike Loch Ness and other places we will visiting in upcoming posts I've still not seen any photos of alleged 'monsters'.

So are there any?

Well frankly, No! Other than what I see as giant Sturgeon which to be fair can grow to massive proportions and look prehistoric, I've seen nothing that look so vaguely monster-like.

Just look at this one caught in 1922!

image.jpeg

And let's face it, we'd all believe there was a lake monster approaching if we saw a 1000lb one of these swimming towards us!

image.jpeg

As far as the myths regarding lake monsters in Lake Baikal, I'm leaning towards encounters with massive sturgeon being the source of most of the stories and sightings, add to that the ancient petroglyph with the depiction of what appears to be some kind of prehistoric creature and you have the makings of an urban legend.. There is no doubt Sturgeon are a monstrous looking creature especially when fully mature. The other anomolies such as the alleged encounter with underwater 10ft humanoids is impossible to comment on except to say that I hope one day the Russian government will see fit to tell us what happened so serious research can be undertaken in the open. If there was in fact an encounter with something extraterrestrial under the cold waters of Lake Baikal, I for one would love to know what the truth is.

Another excellent post my friend, a real eye-opener to an area that I was (until now) unaware of. In relation to the circles on the lake I think this is caused by the ice melting, this makes the water under the ice denser which (alongside the lakes natural currents) causes a circular motion of melt water which is then displayed on the ice surface. Not to say that there isn't a methane element (it's certainly a convenient global warming fit) but I don't think it's as simple as that, indeed this process does occur throughout the world and in places with no methane.

That said, the missing ships could have some kind of gas element (possibly methane) i.e an underwater movement/gas release which causes a gigantic bubble on the surface of the water which in turn incapacitates the crew and sinks the boat. A smaller gas bubble may not sink the boat but the crew may become incapacitated by it, hence the missing time? Equally there could easily be some kind weather condition or natural phenomenum at play here.

I have no problem believing that the monster could be attributed to sturgeon, indeed within their isolation they could easily evolve into a far larger sub species. The alien aspect is also fascinating and indeed if you were looking to have some form of permanent presence on the earth then what better place to hide? Surely if you were to see underwater humanoid creatures you would know what you saw? it's certainly a strange story to make up. Was it Enlil that was known to be the god of water and land? Sorry if I'm beginning to rant :D but this is a fascinating post that sends my thought processes off into multiple directions! What a brilliant post to start 2018 with @tremendospercy excellent work!!

Haha, thanks mate. I'm glad I could get your intellectual juices flowing my friend.
Mentioning Enlil is interesting as there has been a few debates as to the origin of the 'underworld' where Enlil amongst others was said to rule. It has been hypothesised that it could have fact been an actual place such as the entire Southern Hemisphere or under the oceans. A lot of knowledge has been lost in both translation, political/academic interference and through religious dogma.
Hopefully we can piece it back together in our lifetimes.
Thanks for the support, for reading and leaving such an awesome comment buddy.

Mate - sensational! Now SirKnight wants to visit the Lake Baikal and catch himself an alien, monster or sturgeon.

Nice that JC got a mention too. There must be plenty of JC mysteries for you to investigate (if you wanted to of course) for the SteemChurch.

Cheers Brother.

SK.

Catch one for me buddy! 😉
Yes, I found it interesting that JC was mentioned this Far East however as I mentioned in the post there are stories found in numerous Eastern religious texts that talk of Jesus as being a scholar/visitor. The Lake Baikal reference is difficult to research as it comes from local fokelore.
I'll think about putting together a post regarding JC's travels outside of the 'holy land' as it is an interesting subject and a part of his life that is poorly documented in the Bible.
Cheers my friend.

G'day Mate, I was just reading about something similar last week.
Here's the link - you will find it interesting.
http://www.news.com.au/technology/environment/bizarre-creature-caught-on-camera-in-albania-is-it-the-european-version-of-the-loch-ness-monster/news-story/f8256e0a472ee45e547fce05bed90f37

Forgot to mention, Great Post!

Thanks for reading mate.
I'll check the link out later 😉

This is a fascinating article! I've read about Nessie, and it was always interested in her. But I knew nothing about this Lake. I so love how you bring these things to light for us. Thank you for taking the time to share all these details. I also don't buy into global warming... But I know that many people do so I'm not up to debate that LOL to each their own. Awesome work!

Thanks Janelle that means a lot ❤️
I agree, each to their own. I don't have an issue accepting that we're going through climate change I just don't believe it's related to human activity. Politicians just use that excuse as a way to get more taxes and enrich their benefactors in big business.

I agree, dear. I realize that that does not follow the common trend. But nonetheless I'm not convinced in global warming.

I've always been fascinated with lake monsters. And scared- I won't swim in a lake where I can't see the water!

I was in an unfamiliar part of the country on a Native Reservation for work for a couple weeks. My hotel was on the beach. One day I took my baby boy to the shore with a picnic lunch. It was a calm late summer day, and the water was pristine. Oh so gentle waves. We ate and played and enjoyed the beauty. Suddenly I heard yelling and looked up. A HUGE wave was coming straight at us! I scooped him up in his stroller and scrambled up the hill.

The wave took our picnic and things. And would have taken us- and I don't know how to swim!

The hotel manager came running and told me about the lake monster. He thrashes about every once in a while. Nobody has ever seen him but he has been doing it for over 150 years. In fact... you have inspired me- I am going to do some research and write a post :)

Nice one babe, being able to put personal experience into a post gives it an edge.
I'm glad I could be an inspiration Kitten. I've seen many weird stories from all over Nth America regarding lake Monsters, there must be many yet to be identified species in the water and indeed the areas around them.
Thanks fo the great comment babe. 😉

With the ocean depths so unexplored, as well as many lakes being so deep they cannot locate bottoms, I'm confident there are very large, and ancient, water creatures that have survived for so long due to an deep fear of humans (probably knowing how destructive and careless we are)

As long as all the Megalodons are dead, I'm good.

Haha, who knows if they are!?
I'm pretty certain there are species we haven't yet discovered or thought were extinct in our deepest lakes.

Look at the Wollemi Pine. Meant to be dead for 100,000,000 years.
Found alive and well in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney in '96
Pine trees can't run away...

There's undoubtedly much more frightening creatures!

Right! Cup of Yorkshire, doobie in hand, plonk myself into the hot seat for my favourite read When does a Myth become a Truth? Yes, nailed it TP, covering Nessie and to think the sightings span the world like they do, and how much of our ocean is unexplored, it could be wider than we think. So, maybe you remember that Nessie Cartoon and the catchy song that went with it when you were younger, makes me think that by animating it, makes it more unbelievable, if you catch my drift? Resteemed!

Yes mate, I think there are definitely manycreatures out there yet to be discovered. Thanks for your support buddy.

Yes, that's right ....
The zoologist may have discovered so many creatures in this world, some out of the water and some in the water. But they predict that there are too many creatures are remain uncovered specially under the deep water.

Glad to see you back with yet another installment. Keep it up, these are some of my favorite posts on steem.

Thanks @r0nd0n the support means a lot.
I'm glad there is an audience for this type of work at Steemit.

Awesome to see you back to posting and on top form dude.
Interesting stuff, never heard of lake Baikal. Will research more.

Cheers mate.
Yeah it's amazing the things we aren't taught about in the west. History is so much more interesting outside of a curriculum.

There must be a myriad of the strangest creatures living in glacial and deepest of lakes ! The fact we never see them does not make their existance an impossibility ! We know more about our Universe than that whichlives belows the surface of the water !! A lovely post to start the year tremedospercy ) Happy New Year to you Brother )

Happy New Year to you too buddy.
You're dead on, the lakes and oceans are filled with creatures yet to be discovered. While that is known it is always assumed that the bigger ones could never stay hidden from us, I don't agree.
Time will tell.

Excellent & comprehensive writeup. There's definitely things going on underwater from strange lights/ufos & the infamous silver divers. There's so much We know yet also remarkably so little

Thank you for the kind words.
I agree, it amazes me how little we know about the deepest oceans and lakes.
Hopefully some of these mysteries will be revealed to us one day.

You're Welcome and I think they will

Great read man. I've been to Loch Ness but Nessie must of been shy that day hehe :) Often great lakes of immense depths were connected to the sea at some point, so it's possible that in this sheltered cocoon that a species nowadays considered to be a 'monster' could have made it their home.

I agree mate, there is much we do not know or have not discovered. New species are discovered in lakes and oceans all the time. The depth of water at Lake Baikal is over a mile at some points, that's ocean depth!
I'm fairly sure that there are many species of creature to be discovered. Or maybe some massive centuries old sturgeon moving around down there like submarines, who knows?
Thanks for reading and commenting buddy.

This lake seems to be a hotspot for mysterious events. Your article has got me curious enough to have a look into it myself, thank you.

Thanks freind, glad you enjoyed it.

Water has always been very mysterious to us.

We die inside of it, it’s dark, we cannot move fast.

Deep water is naturally scary for us. Therefore, we create monsters living there so we have excuses to not go there.

Maybe in the distant past that was the case, but let's face it there are monsters down there! Big ugly ones that will happily eat us given the chance. I do agree with you in part although I think there may be more to it.
Cheers for reading and commenting dude.

Percy is back in the house!
Cracking read sir, have to admit I skimmed in places but have bookmarked to come back and read closer when I have the time to give it the attention it deserves.
#TeamGB ftw!

Hey, Hey, how ya doing buddy?
Thanks for taking a read my man, great to see you back.

I really enjoy reading myths, especially when they are well written! Thank you

You're welcome, thanks for reading.

very interesting!
you know I'm from Russia but here stories about creatures in the BAikal aren't popular, but Loch ness monster is well-known)

That is interesting, Loch Ness is famous all over the world as it had a lot of press in the 20th century. Many of the alleged pictures have been proven to be faked and the local area has a huge tourist industry based on the monster. Lake Baikal is so much more interesting as it has had a few unusual events take place as well as the petroglyph depicting some kind of creature from thousands of years ago.
Thanks for reading and commenting.

faked yes? a fairy-tale for tourists)
Baikal in Russia is more famous thanks to its unbelievable beauty and unique nature
for example this is very popular - unusual color of ice can be met only in the Baikal

Wow, what an amazing picture.
I think local populations are bound to attempt fakery to get more business to an area such as Loch Ness, however I don't see any attempts at faking in Baikal. Many weird anomolies have been covered up or dismissed by Government over the years which I find interesting. Who knows what the truth is? I just find the legends fascinating.
Thanks for reading and commenting.

sir call me curious but is there any historical evidence that Christ went to that place?

I've not seen any written evidence. The story of his visit is wrapped up in local legend and is a story passed down through generations.
Check this article regarding the story and paintings depicting the alleged visit.

thanks for the info sir learn a lot from it. I thouht it was before his death he visited russia

What a wonderful post all wrapped up..... I so enjoyed every letter of it

Thank you.

beautifull lake @tremendospercy

If you could cover the Mothman and Thunderbird with the same effectiveness and details, I would be really grateful to come here and read it.

mate, I am beginning to join steemit, I have followed you, thank you. if any time see my blog. send regards for success

That lake looks very scary! I don't think I'll be swimming in there 😵
