Heraklion’s Venetian Port is one of its most visited landmarks.
It was possibly fortified by the Arabs in the 9th or 10th century
A tower (Castellum Comunis) which was destroyed by a big earthquake (1303), was the forefather of a new Castle that was built by the Venetians to improve the city’s fortifications.
The fortress was completed in 1540, and since then it is standing proudly across the city of Heraklion
