Pope Francis urged people to resist the excesses of consumerism in the period leading up to Christmas, calling it a virus that attacks faith and offends the needy. He said, "When you live for things, things are never enough, greed grows, other people become obstacles in a race." He added that consumerism is a virus that corrodes faith because it makes people forget the brother who knocks at your door.

So speaks the man who lives in a golden palace :) Still, he does talk some sense. People are too hung up on having stuff with companies trying to influence us to buy more. There is something to be said for judging people by their actions rather than their possessions.
Have you read/seen The Name of the Rose? It features a debate between the Vatican and Franciscans about whether Jesus was rich and if they should own stuff. It's an old argument, but the church has always been rich. It's almost like people think they can buy their way into heaven.

I partly agree with what the pope said. It's nothing new anyway. Same seasonal platitude. I just wish he were more coherent and consistent with what he preaches. There are worst things corroding the faith of millions around the world and churches, far from preventing that, have contributing to it.
The pope has not hidden his sympathy for leftist governments, especially those in latin america (because allegedly they care about the poor and attack the rich/bad). Then, he blantanly ignores the attrocities committed by said governments. In the name of brotherly love he receives the visit of people who, if there were a hell, would be burning there.
Unfortunately for all of us, both the pope and the bad guys know there is no hell or heaven.

Sometimes these people hardly practice what they preach really, I'm basically thinking he's got it right spot on, consumerism can be crazy I'm looking forward to him leading by example
