Mourning Cloak * Butterfly

Saw this 2 plus inch Butterfly flying for 30 to 50 feet and then landing. Did this several times until it rested.The weather was chilly for a butterfly in the high 40's F. / 8+ C....

An attractive fellow, dark rich chocolate in color with a lacy white border along the wings edge. Adults live 10-11 months and may be our longest lived butterfly.

That is crazy that you found this butterfly on such a cold day. I have never seen a Mourning Cloak in person and I hope I do sometime in the near future. Great capture Mike. : )

They seems to be very common according to the info... Keep your eyes open... Stay well... 😼😊

I know but I am still in shock that you actually saw one. My eyes will be peeled as soon as it is warm enough for me to go outside. You stay well too Mike. : )

Wow it's nicely intact. Most of the ones I see have tattered wings, probably because they live so long.

Most have recently emerged from its cocoon...
