I asked chatgpt bot on steem blockchain:

It says: "There are currently over 1.8 million accounts on the Steem blockchain."

I also queried with "!info" bot - that would provide the most up-to-date figure:

It says: Total Steem Accounts: 1815990

I also checked the numbers on Account Ranking which calls Steem RPC node and collect data, organize into MySQL Database:

It says: Total Accounts: 1,808,665 Data Updated: 2023-05-10 18:55:27.

Conclusion

So, most likely, the answer from ChatGPT (over 1.8 million) is correct, but not sure how he/she knows? As far as I know, the data to train ChatGPT is up to 2021 - which certainly we didn't have that many accounts on Steem, or maybe we already had 1.8 million times at that time?

Why we care so much?

The Metcalfe's law says that a network’s value is proportional to the square of the number of nodes in the network. The end nodes can be computers, servers and simply users.

So, if we have more legit Steem Users (not the alt or bots), the value of the steem blockchain will increase, so the STEEM price.
