I am Proudly write this Post as a Son of a Greatest farmer in Sri Lanka. When we are talking about the paddy cultivation, Sri Lanka is rising up to high Level in the World. As a Sri Lankan we can stand without any support from other countries to our cultivation.
I will describe this topic under six sub topics.
Sinhalese are called 'Kumbura' in terms of Paddy field. Kumbura is the land on which farmers cultivate paddy. Ancient and traditional farmers were self-sufficient in rice production and Ancient Ceylon is said to have been among the foremost paddy exporters in the world.
Farmers cultivate more than half of the land are of Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa where is my hometown has a special place, Monaragala, Ampara, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee are the areas cultivation are going mainly. Ceylon was popularly know as the "The Great barn of the East" during the regin of king parakkramabahu who is renowed for his hydraulic construction and renovation
See Sama is the process of harrowing and preparing land prior to paddy cultivation, which is done using a Nagula (plough) and oxen. Now farmers are used to harrowing using tractors.
Poru Gama is the process of leveling the paddy field with the use of oxen and a tool known as the Poruva. Poru Gama is generally done a few weeks after harrowing and fertilizing paddy fields. This process ensures that there is uniform water flow from one Liyadda to another.

Weeding is chiefly performed by women. Rhymes called ‘Nelum Kavi’ are generally sung together during the process to cast off weariness and boredom. Weeding an entire Kumburuyaya often takes a fortnight.
03)Harvesting
Paddy was harvested when they turn light gold in color. Farmers would harvest their crop together while singing ‘Goyam Kavi’. The harvest is temporarily stored in the Kamatha (threshing floor) before it is taken home. Normally farmers are used to harvesting using machines. After harvesting farmers sell their harvest to rice mills.
These are the main sub topics when talking the Paddy Cultivation in Sri Lanka. So I hope to write in my next post about the rice production process in Sri Lanka. Hope you got the knowledge of paddy cultivation.
