Captain Lewis Nixon
This is Captain Lewis Nixon of Easy Company, the morning after celebrating V-E Day (Victory in Europe) 1945. You will see that he is terribly hungry.
In Berchtesgaden (southeast Germany), Nixon first received an extensive wine collection assembled by Hermann Göring, a veteran fighter pilot of World War I and one of the most powerful figures in the Nazi Party. The wine you see in the photo was stolen by the Nazis from wineries throughout France and other European occupied territories.
Throughout his service in World War II, Nixon never fired a single shot in combat, even though he experienced heavy fighting on the front lines. Nixon is best remembered for always drinking whiskey on him, and especially for his fondness for Vat 69, a blended scotch whiskey.
Dick Winters (Commander of Easy Company) said this about Nixon:
“Captain Lewis Nixon and I were together every step of the way from D-Day to Berchtesgaden, May 8, 1945 – VE-Day. I still consider Lewis Nixon the best combat officer I ever had the opportunity to work under fire with. He never showed fear and he was always able to think clearly and quickly in the most difficult times. Very few people can stay smooth under a concentration of alcohol near cannons. Nixon was one of those officials. Ever since we met at Officer Candidate School, he always believed in me. When we were training before we shipped out, Nixon hid the entire inventory of Vat 69 in my footlocker under the tray of socks, underwear, and sweaters. What greater confidence could I ask than to trust in his precious inventory of Watts 69? "
The drink was a favorite of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who decided to take it with him on his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914 "for medicinal and ceremonial purposes".
Recently, archaeologists and researchers finally found the Endurance, the wreck of the Shackleton ship that sank in the Antarctic 106 years ago.
