The heart of the great composer Frederic Chopin rests under a small monument in the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw.
Frederic Chopin was born in Poland but died in France at the age of just 39.
Although he emigrated to France some time ago, he was always very attached to his homeland, and before he breathed his last in 1849, he asked to be buried in Paris, thanks to the fear of being buried alive. That his heart leads to Poland. The great musician is still buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery alongside Moliere, Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison, and his heart has been the protagonist of a long history.
It seems that the famous composer's sister managed to bring the organ to Warsaw by placing the organ in a jar containing cognac, hiding it under a skirt to escape the control of Russian soldiers. Initially the container was kept by Chopin's family and later it was preserved in a pillar in the Church of the Holy Cross.
The Nazis stole it in 1944, but fortunately it was preserved until the end of the conflict when the Germans returned it to the Polish church.
The heart was exhumed in 2014 in top secrecy after special permission from the government. A rare occurrence, for Poland it is a sacred relic that symbolizes the spirit of the nation.
The analysis of the organ, carried out in front of 13 people, including two scientists, the Minister of Culture and the Bishop of Warsaw, aimed to gain more information about the true pathology of the musician. To prevent the cognac from evaporating, samples were taken, many photographs were taken and the container was resealed with wax. Even after the inspection, the information was not immediately made public, the photos were classified and many questions remained unanswered.
Until 2017, when scientists published a definitive diagnosis in the American Medical Journal: it was determined that Chopin died of pericarditis, a rare complication of chronic tuberculosis. On careful observation of the heart, it was noted that it was covered with light fibrous material, with small lesions, and severe TB symptoms.
Today the great musician's heart rests under a small monument in the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw, which bears the inscription "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be."
