The park, spanning over 27 acres and located adjacent to the Hanthane Tea Museum premises, is home to over a hundred species of migratory birds, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers. The establishment of this park is the result of a comprehensive 40-year study of non-endemic birds to Sri Lanka, which makes it a unique and important addition to the country's natural heritage. The park has been developed at a cost of Rs. 490 million rupees, making it a significant investment in Sri Lanka's ecotourism industry. In addition to serving as a sanctuary for migratory birds, the Hanthana International Bird Park and Recreation Center will also have a unit for breeding and exporting foreign birds, an educational and recreational center for school students, and a natural bird study center.

The center for breeding and exporting foreign birds is expected to provide significant revenue for Sri Lanka's economy, as it is likely to attract bird enthusiasts and breeders from around the world. The educational and recreational center for school students is expected to promote environmental awareness and provide an interactive learning experience for young visitors. The natural bird study center will be an essential resource for researchers and ornithologists, providing a unique opportunity to study migratory birds and their behavior patterns. The Hanthana International Bird Park and Recreation Center is a significant achievement for Sri Lanka, not only in terms of its contribution to the country's ecotourism industry but also in terms of its commitment to preserving its natural heritage for future generations to enjoy.
