Sea turtles belong under the phylum Reptilia. They evolved from the Amphibians. Amphibians are live both on land and in the water. But most Reptilia are well adapted to the terrestrial environment. Some reptiles returned to the water. Those reptiles have adaptations for marine life.
Eg: Sea turtles, sea snakes.
Who are the sea turtles? They have widely distributed organisms. Sea turtles are found in tropical and warm temperature oceans around the world. Sea turtles are endangered species. Sea turtles are come to the land and lay eggs. Those eggs have a pim-pon ball appearance. Turtles bone on land and live in the marine environment.
We can find various types of sea turtles in the ocean. Sea turtles can be distinguished from one another by carapace patterns (hard body cover), head shape, size, scale patterns, and the number of toes.
The largest marine turtle is the Leatherback. It has a 2-meter length and 450 Kg weight. The leatherback turtle has not hard carapace. It has a leathery carapace. The name comes from the appearance of their carapace. Anyway, all other marine turtle has hard carapace. The leatherback turtle can swim at speed of up to 32 Km per hour.
The smallest marine turtle is the Lepidochelys kempli (Kemp’s ridley). The smallest turtle has a 60 cm body length and 35 Kg weight.
Sea turtle's lifespan is nearly 200 years. They have adapted to the marine environment with a streamlined body and light-weighted bones for their buoyancy. They have no teeth. Therefore, they have strong jaws for using their feeding behaviors. Sea turtles eat various types of an organism as mollusks, crustaceans, fish, algae, jellyfish, etc.
Mature sea turtle mating in shallow water. Then females come to the shore near the high tide are at night. Female turtles make a hole in sand using their hind limbs (legs in the backside). They lay 100 fertilized lethargy eggs. Females are come to the shore four or five times to lay eggs. The eggs are buried in the sand for 2 months and eggs have some temperature. Why is this temperature important? Because these temperatures determine the sex of turtles. Eggs develop 28 0C and below 28 0C it becomes male and develops 30 0C and above 30 0 C it becomes female baby turtles.
Those baby turtles then moved to the ocean for their long journey.
