The art of making Indonesian batik has been firmly entrenched in Sri Lanka over the past century. The batik industry in Sri Lanka is small in scale and helps to highlight and develop the creative talents of individuals.

Foreigners are very fond of these batik creations and can make a lot of money by dealing with foreigners economically. Rows of small batik stalls can be seen on both sides of the road in the coastal town of Hikkaduwa in the Galle District.

Batik can create a variety of designs. It has the ability to create a variety of elegant outfits such as batik gowns and batik sarees. Batik manufacturers make t-shirts, sarongs and beachwear that are well-suited to the tropical climate. Foreign tourists love to wear beach clothes made of batik.

Many foreign tourists visiting the Hikkaduwa beach go to the batik shops and buy various batik fabrics. They wear batik fabric until the end of their holiday season. Sri Lankan batik makers create beautiful batik using a variety of clothing as well as tablecloths, murals, and bedding.

This batik art which was started by the villagers of Indonesia in the distant past was brought to Sri Lanka by the Dutch. Jawani imports most of the batik paintings in Sri Lanka from village artists. They use cotton fabrics for those designs and the colors they use are also very intricate.

Currently, the batik industry in Sri Lanka is booming. Many women like to wear dresses with batik designs. By enhancing this batik design art which is also loved by foreigners, the potential of the batik manufacturers in the country can be enhanced.
