Japan’s L0 Series Maglev Bullet Train break its own past record for the world’s fastest train, by reaching 375 miles per hour. It is no secret bullet trains are extremely badass, but did you know they go as quickly they make sound loosely the same as a sonic boom?
Or that a few of the most advanced bullet trains utilize cryogenic cooling to make things more effective and efficient?
These are some interesting facts about the bullet trains you mightn’t know.
• Original bullet trains are the Japanese 0 Series SHINKANSEN – Nickname create when the concept was primarily proposed in the 30s, and when the top speed train started operating in 64, it sort of resembled a bullet, so the name fixed. The fact that it’d do 130 miles per hour did not hurt, either.
• The fastest commercially operated bullet train on earth is in China – Japan might be well-known for its bullet trains, but the Shanghai Maglev train regularly hits 268 miles per hour mark with passengers on board.
• Bullet trains are the safest way to travel – Over ten billion passengers have ridden on Japan’s top speed rails alone, and none of them have ever died in the collision. Globally, there’ve only ever been a handful of fatal collisions.
• Today, most bullet trains are not maglevs – Maglevs are power efficient at high speeds and therefore able of much higher standard operating speeds. In spite of the flashy technology, though, most of the bullet trains are actually closely related to common trains, albeit on incredibly smooth tracks.
• The fastest non-Maglev train is in France – The French high-Speed train hit 357.2 miles per hour to officially become the fastest training that still utilizes wheels. Translated, that is around a hundred miles per hour faster than a Veyron.
