Today I want to write a post on Community Steem Sea about the history of Islam in serving its people who need health services.
HOSPITAL FINANCING IN THE ISLAMIC ERA
The Islamic hospital in the Middle Ages was recognized by the world as the best hospital of its time. The building is magnificent and the service is excellent. Even now, some aspects of the service are still considered better than modern hospitals.
Islamic hospitals are far from gloomy, dirty, and scary. Most have exterior and interior designs similar to the king's residence. Hospitals in Baghdad, Egypt and Syria, have the exact same furniture as the royal palaces, complete with fountains and large gardens.
From the service side, hospitals can accommodate up to 8000 beds, as happened at Al-Manshuri Hospital in Cairo. Anyone who is sick can be accommodated regardless of race, color, or religion. There is no time limit for hospitalization; patients can go home only when they are completely healed.
In addition to medical services, hospitals at that time were able to provide a variety of healthy and fresh food menus, clean clothes, assistants who helped bathe and dress, to clowns to dance and entertain patients. They are ready to accommodate patients both day and night.
Do not collect fees from patients
With excellent service and such a magnificent building, the hospital does not charge a fee. Medical ethics based on Islamic concepts make health care providers do not care about how much money the patient can pay. Treating is part of a social task (charity) which they understand as a beneficial charity, the reward will continue to flow until the Day of Resurrection and will not be interrupted even though the perpetrator has died.
Hospitals in the Islamic era understood their function as social institutions. They provide free all services, both for the rich and poor. Some even give patients clean clothes and pocket money when patients go home, as happened at Al-Nuri Hospital and Al-Manshuri Hospital. Patients are greatly helped by this provision, especially when they have not been able to work optimally after hospitalization.
Then what about the fate of the hospital employees if the patients are not paid? Who provides for their daily needs?
Doctors and health care providers continue to earn salaries. Doctor salaries range from 50-750 US dollars. A resident who stays at the hospital two days and two nights a week earns about 300 dirhams per month. The numbers were very large at that time, moreover, basic needs such as housing, education, and health were guaranteed by the state.
Outside the hospital, for example in their private practice, doctors can collect fees from their medical services and actions, especially those that require special skills. This is permissible in Islam because the Messenger of Allah also gave wages to healers who carried out venisection (cut tendons) for him. In the Abbasid era, doctors who performed cataract surgery set a minimum fee of 15 US dollars. This is reasonable, considering that doctors have to provide their own equipment and medicines in their private practice.
A number of doctors are able to enrich themselves because of the great expertise they have. Jibrail Bin Baktishu, who was the director of the Baghdad Hospital and the Caliph's personal physician, owned acres of farmland and could buy all kinds of gold, silver and cobalt. According to his secretary, Jibrail's income is around 4.9 million dirhams per year.
Some still maintain an attitude of zuhud and choose a simple life. Ibn Gazzar for example. Although one of the most brilliant doctors in Tunisia, he prefers to help the poor and rarely asks for money. He did not have luxury but was highly respected in the medical world for his intelligence and the number of medical books he wrote.
