It's my first clay pot dish ever! I have always known that claypot dishes are popular here in Singapore but I never really had the encouragement to try it until today. I was out of ideas of what to eat for my dinner and so I wanted to try something unique. This may not be a unique dish in SG but it's unique for my food experience.
I want something light so I chose the Claypot Beancurd with Fried Fish. The name says it all, it has the "soft" beancurd and it was paired with a few pieces of deep-fried fish.
I'm not familiar with a claypot dish but what I do know is that the fiery effect of the claypot bowl is the part of this dish that makes it taste good. The way the sauce boils on the edge of the claypot says it all. It's the concentration of flavor that is happening within the bowl that gives me the impression that it will be a good dish. I wasn't disappointed, I like this dish.
I also want to commend the complimentary soup. It's an herbal soup that has a familiar Chinese spice flavor in it. It also has vegetables like water crest, onions, and wolfberries. I like having wolfberries in a soup because it has a natural sweetness to it.
Here's a piece of deep-fried fish that I dipped in the boiling sauce. The sauce doesn't have a deep taste and flavor because it is meant to be boiled and concentrated until the flavor and taste are dense. There's nothing special about the fish but I like that it has a thick batter because it absorbs the flavor of the sauce well.
It's time for the soft beancurd! I seldom eat beancurd in a savory meal so I don't know what to expect with this bite. I was amazed by the flavor of this beancurd. I'm tasting seafood flavor and I can't tell where the flavor is coming from. I prefer the flavor of the beancurd compared to the fried fish, I'm impressed.
Here's the whole set of the meal. It also comes with a bowl of steamed rice. This set is a complete meal that is enough for me to feel satisfied after finishing it. The S$6.00 that I spent on this meal is worth it. I will be coming back to try the other items on the menu.
Aside from the claypot dishes, I may also try the steamed dumplings. I think they are good :)
