The Southernmost City in the USA Naalehu is home to Punalu’u Bakery
The Punalu’u Bakery is found on Route Number # 11 in the small town of Naalehu. The highway known as Route 11 is officially named Mamalahoa Highway. The town of Na‘alehu is half-way between the city of Kailua-Kona and the Volcanoes National Park. The bakery website says that the bakery and visitor center has more than 200,000 visitors each year. As an additional Fun Fact I should mention that the coordinates latitude 19 degrees, four minutes north of the equator, make the Punalu‘u Bake Shop and Visitor Center the southernmost bakery in the United States of America’s.
The bakery features sweet bread, malasadas, turnovers, cheesecake, pies, eclairs, and other pastries. The types of sweetbread include guava, macadamia nut, original, taro and apple cinnamon. Additionally the bakery has an outdoor restaurant featuring favorite local food, various sandwiches, vegetarian selections, fresh green garden and fruit salads, fresh brewed Ka‘u coffee and locally made ice cream.
Lastly, but not least, the bakery has a four-acre garden full of tropical palms, flowers, and other exotic looking Hawaiian flowers and plants.
I ate lunch inside this pretty gazebo outside.
It was lovely there, and easy to find. South on highway 11 from Hilo about 65 miles.
A lovely drive with both ocean and Mountain View’s, a black sand beach and volcano nation park are on the way.
It’s so great to get out of the house, just wear mask, keep six feet away and wash your hands frequently.
I walked the grounds for exercise after my feast of various baked goods: cookies, pies, cakes, a slice here, a cookie there, now I have to walk those calories off !

Red Snap Dragon Flower
The food was good, the scenery great and it wasn’t crowded, so I felt very safe and enjoyed the fresh air Covid Free I think! :)
