Wilma Rudolph was born into a poor family in 1940 in Tennessee, USA. She was the 20th of 22 siblings and was born prematurely, weighing only 4.5 pounds. To make things worse, she was diagnosed with polio at the age of four and told she would never walk again.

However, Wilma was determined to overcome her disabilities. She underwent multiple surgeries and hours of physical therapy, and eventually, she not only learned to walk but also to run. She became so good at it that she started competing in local races and winning.

By the time she was in high school, Wilma was one of the fastest sprinters in the country and was invited to try out for the 1956 Summer Olympics. Despite her youth, she made the team and went on to win a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay.

Four years later, in 1960, Wilma was the star of the Summer Olympics in Rome, winning three gold medals in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. She broke world records and became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field in a single Olympics.
