Loner

Ever since he was a child, he was a loner always in a crowd but at his heart he was a lone wolf, watching and experiencing life as an outsider looking in. Feeling everything too deeply and not being able to help was the most terrifying to him. As a child, he was labelled as too sensitive and vivacious, he himself doesn’t understand that how can he be full of life yet so distant from it, people near and dear to him always confided in him and he like a sponge absorbed all of their pain and sufferings but not a single idea on how to help.

He doesn’t not remember when their sorrows became his and he started to look at an already distant world with disdain. He started hiding himself from the world, keeping everything within. Sometimes all he wanted to do was howl in the night as though the moon will see and hear the sorrow and grief behind his anguish. It was not like he was cut off from the world you would always see him in crowds, with friends admiring them how worldly they all seem. He heard their stories of hardships and struggles of their energetic lives and always felt a sigh of relief that somebody somewhere is living while he is merely passing through.

When he was alone you would always find him in the sanctuary of his room lost in thoughts, contemplating the things he was too afraid to share knowing that nobody will understand his point of view or how come he thinks the way he thinks eventually hiding himself from his own shadow. His mind was the playground to him where he would always be experimenting, forming views and reliving the conversations he never had the chance to share. He was not good at small talk but would be interested in deep issues and would always be available to those who need him but as for him he will remain a loner.

Something between hypersensitive and empath... There are people like that. You could envy them or pity them. Depending on your point of view.

Since this phenomenon was only scientifically investigated and proven quite late (I think it's only been a topic taken seriously for 5 or 6 years?), I find it quite interesting that "Star Trek" with the Betazoid (Deanna Troi) drew attention to this kind of emotional communication very early on...

Haven’t watched Star Trek but read about Betazoid to understand your reference better. It’s the same way with loners they also sense emotions. I wouldn’t pity them cause that’s how they only know to be.

While the inspiration comes from this picture, I think "this loner part" is an integral part of every human being. It's only that some people are better at hiding this trait than the others.
I could literally feel you have written this part for me,

people near and dear to him always confided in him and he like a sponge absorbed all of their pain and sufferings but not a single idea on how to help.

but then again, this is something experienced by almost every one. Some are just better at adapting to the surroundings.
They say that humans are social animals... I say they are loners when it comes to the feelings.

Beautiful post!

this is something experienced by almost everyone. Some are just better at adapting to the surroundings.

Yeah you are right and i think everyone should be by themselves every once in a while to appreciate their own company to understand ourselves better for our own sake and for the sake of others.

Hello @beyondhersmile. What an interesting topic you nicely describe.

I don't want to start a debate or anything, but I feel like this is an issue mostly seen in modern life. It seems to me that the more "primitive" a society is the less loner we can be. But right now, especially in prosperous countries, we are isolating ourselves for some reason, as if this would be beneficial for anyone.

Regarding the character you describe, I can relate to him. Being even slightly different in a community is a sin to it. You're severely punished by the culture, from the first day you come in contact with it.

I know there are different personality types, but I just wonder how much the loner is made as such by the environment, and how much comes from within.

Kind regards.

Love your perspective on it i think both factors contribute to isolation but it has more to do with your inner self thats only my view point. But yes in this day and age we are becoming more isolated in real life but connected in digital life.
