Geno was the chief of his tribe in that Himalayan state. He was the richest, and the people of the tribe respected him for his status as well as his behavior and used to work on his advice.

Geno had only one daughter, Jaya. She was beautiful and virtuous. No one could compete with her in dancing. Many young men wanted to marry her. But Jaya married her lover. They two met at a dance competition and decided to get married.

According to the customs of the tribe, the girl is the heir of her parents' family, and after marriage, the girl's husband comes to the girl's house and lives with her family, as is common in a few Himalayan tribes. Jaya's husband also came and started living in her house.

Jaya's parents were now growing old. One day, Geno called Jaya and handed over all his property, house, farms, money, and everything to her.

Jaya's mother took out a beautiful dress from one of the boxes and gave it to her. At last, after reciting a mantra, she took out a shawl woven with silken strings and studded with blue and green gems.

"Oh, mother! How beautiful is this shawl?" Jaya moved forward to cover her head with that shawl.

"Wait, don't touch it. This is the magic shawl that the goddess gave to my grandmother. It has been in our family since then. Keep it safe, and never touch it without chanting the holy mantra.

She said, "If you touch it without chanting the mantra, then you will face disaster,” and then her mother taught that mantra to Jaya. After learning the mantra, Jaya put the shawl on her head. Now she looked even more beautiful than before.

A while later, Jaya's parents passed away. Jaya became sad. Her husband tried to keep her happy. Both of them did their work together. He would take Jaya to village fairs and festivals and entertain her.

Jaya and her husband managed the farming well. Jaya kept the magic cloak given to her by her mother very carefully. After reciting the mantra, she would wear it only on special occasions, and after reading the mantra, she would keep it in a special box.

That year, there were torrential rains during the monsoon. It rained continuously for several days. One day, there was good sunshine. Jaya put the household clothes to dry in the sun. She mistakenly kept her precious magic cloak to dry in the sun.

Then she thought I should go and bring some fruits from the forest. It's been a long time since I went to the forest." She took a basket and went out.

But before leaving, she told her husband, “No matter how wet it gets, do not touch the shawl.” But she forgot to tell him that the cover was magical. So she did not teach the necessary mantra to her husband.

She thought it was sunny, and she would quickly return with fruits, pick up the shawl and other clothes, and put them in their place.

Jaya had just picked a few fresh fruits when suddenly the sky was covered with dark clouds. It started raining, with thunder and lightning.

Jaya's husband noticed that the clothes were getting wet. He called Jaya, but how could Jaya hear him as the noise of clouds and lightning was too loud?

Jaya was coming back quickly, but before she could arrive, Jaya's husband thought that the beautiful shawl, which Jaya loved so much, was getting wet and would get spoiled. But as soon as he extended his hand to lift it, the coverlet stuck to his body.

Slowly, his body started changing. Now his body started changing into the body of a peacock, and colorful feathers grew on his body.

Jaya reached home and saw her husband's body turning into a peacock's body. She started crying. In her grief, she forgot to chant the mantra. She tried to remove the shawl wrapped around her husband's body.

As soon as she touched her husband, her body also started changing, but her body had fewer wings because all the silk and blue-green gems of the shawl had transformed into the wings of her husband, who had become a beautiful peacock.

Jaya's share had few or no feathers, and from that day on, peahens had no colorful feathers. Even the ones that came were not as beautiful and shiny as her husband's feathers.

Her husband became a peacock with bright green-blue feathers, and Jaya became a peahen with fewer feathers but no colors. Even today, whenever dark clouds appear in the sky and it starts pouring, this pair of dancers dance together in joy and pain.

Peacocks... I like peacocks. Do you know any white peacocks (as rare as white ravens ;-))?

I haven't seen any so far but maybe I will if they exist!

I love your story a true lovestory.
I guess mother's shawl gave her less feathers out of protection.
With us the male peacock stands for vanity. It is said that it shows its featers if you tell it you look better as he is: Pauw, pauw, pauw, ik ben lekker mooier dan jou! (peacock, peacock, peacock I am forsure better looking than you!). Thanks for this beautiful story.

I feel hurt by the post you linked too. Extremely hurt I must say.

For you a 100% I wish it could be 10 times more, for the recommended post too but I admit I regret it.
_I'm just a woman and an extremely hurt single mom by the first sentences. _
