Our Heroes... Harry and Jay

Our heroes story today is about the success of Harry Little and Jay. And yes Harry was little. Only ten years old.

One day not too long ago little Harry was walking along his favorite path through the forest near his home. He heard a cry, "HELP! HELP!" coming from somewhere off the path. Pushing the bushes and vines out of the way he followed the sounds of the cries.

And there he was. A boy deep inside a large sunken hole. Little Harry called out to him, "I'll help you," and tried to reach out to him by lying down at the edge of the pit and extending his hand and arm. It would have been a good idea if Harry was a little bigger. But he was small and light compared to size and weight of the boy in the hole.

The boy in the hole scrambled a bit up the side of the pit even as the walls gave way and with great difficulty managed to grab hold of Harry's little hand but unfortunately.... pulling Harry into the hole with him. Now they were both in the hole.

Why neither of them thought for Harry to go for help rather than try to get Jay out by himself is a bit of a puzzle. But sometimes people don't think very clearly in a difficult situation and after all they were both more or less children.

The boy's name was Jay. He was sixteen years old and had been foraging for wild edibles, one of his hobbies, when the ground gave way and he found himself in the deep hole with no way to get out.

They decided that Harry being smaller and lighter than Jay should stand on Jay's shoulders. Stretching as much as he could, Harry grasped the root of a tree near the top of the pit. Miraculously he managed to get out.

Jay was still in the hole. And yet even now neither of them thought of getting help. Maybe it had become such an adventure that they wanted to show their bravery and heroism and not just have "a rescue". Harry had definitely taken the challenge on.

He thought, "I know what to do. I'll place a strong branch across the top of the pit and tie my belt to it so that it hangs down for Jay to grab hold of. Then.. he can pull himself out..."

It worked. Jay got himself out. It was a kind of victory for both of them. Jay raised his arm and fist in the air to show victory and smiled lovingly toward Harry like Harry was his little brother. Both were a little worse for wear and tear, covered in dirt, but safe and sound. And with a story to tell when they got home.

Self-responsible! They will master any difficult situation!

Your story of Harry and Jay was interesting, but everyone's father is their favorite hero. All fathers work hard every day without any complaints. They ignore all their needs for the sake of their children and family.

But Harry's bravery fascinates me.

Yes. The father is the hero. You're right. Now I am thinking of my father. He was definitely a hero. And a tough act to follow!
