Once upon a time, the Kingdom of Wisnuloka was led by Lord Vishnu. The Kingdom of Wisnuloka was inhabited by gods and angels. One of the angels was named Dewi Ratih or the Moon Goddess. The Kingdom of Wisnuloka was often threatened by giants who lived on Earth Balidwipa. Among the giants, the most frightening was Kala Rau.
He was big and muscular. His face was very scary. He was also very powerful. His supernatural powers exceeded the supernatural powers of several gods.
Kala Rau threatened to attack the Kingdom of Wisnuloka because his love was rejected by Dewi Ratih or the Moon Goddess. Lord Vishnu thought long and hard. One way that could be taken was to share the tirta amerta (water of life) to the gods. The tirta amerta could prevent the gods from dying when Kala Rau attacked the Kingdom of Wisnuloka.
Lord Vishnu then gave a jug containing the tirta amerta to the gods. Lord Vishnu advised that each god should drink just one sip of the tirta amerta.
One by one the gods drank the tirta amerta from the jug. First it was Dewa Iswara, then Dewa Sambu, Brahma, Mahadewa, and Sangkara. When it was Dewa Kuwera's turn, Lord Vishnu smelled a strange smell. Lord Vishnu felt that Dewa Kuwera's figure was suspicious. Lord Vishnu's suspicions grew even greater after seeing Dewa Kuwera drinking tirta amerta many times. Suddenly Lord Vishnu shouted, "You are not Kuwera! You are the giant Kala Rau!"
All the gods who heard Lord Vishnu's scream were shocked. Lord Vishnu then shot an arrow through the neck of the fake Lord Kuwera. Slowly Lord Kuwera turned into Kala Rau. Kala Rau's neck was severed and his head separated from his body. Immediately, the gods threw Kala Rau's body to earth. Kala Rau's corpse that was thrown to earth turned into a kentungan or mortar.
While Kala Rau's head that was separated from his body floated in the sky. The head had not become a corpse because it had drunk the tirta amerta. The water he drank had only reached his throat. Therefore, Kala Rau's head was still alive.
Once upon a time, during a full moon, Kala Rau's head met Dewi Ratih. Kala Rau's head then blocked Dewi Ratih. "Dewi Ratih! You can't avoid me anymore! You can't reject my love. Now you are mine!" said Kala Rau to Dewi Ratih.
Dewi Ratih's body trembled hearing Kala Rau's words. She couldn't avoid it as Kala Rau's head came closer and hugged her. Dewi Ratih's beautiful body was slowly swallowed by Kala Rau.
The greedy giant thought that Dewi Ratih's body had entered his stomach. It turned out that Kala Rau's guess was wrong. A moment later, little by little Dewi Ratih's body reappeared. When Dewi Ratih's body was swallowed by Kala Rau's head, the Earth of Balidwipa became dark. The event of Dewi Ratih's body being swallowed by Kala Rau is believed by the people of Balidwipa to be the cause of a lunar eclipse. Therefore, every time a lunar eclipse occurs, the people flock to beat gongs, mortars, and other sound-making instruments.
