Introduction

Hello great minds, it is my utmost pleasure learning so much more about coinmarketcap.com, all thanks to @stream4u.

1. What is Coinmarketcap

PicsArt_07-09-12.00.58.jpg

Coinmarketcap is an on-chain reservoir that contains the both past and the up-to-date information about cryptocurrencies. It takes a deep dive into the crypto space, get all the salient information about a coin, ensures that every bit of information about a particular coin listed on their site is trustworthy, accurate and also provides up-to-date price update of the coin.

With more than 5500 cryptocurrencies available in coinmarketcap.com, traders can always visit the site, get some helpful information about a particular coin before deciding if to trade the coin or not.

2. How Coinmarketcap.com is useful for Crypto User/Trader?

There are some salient information coinmarketcap.com provides crypto users and traders with. But before I mention some of the relevant information, I will like to let us understand that coinmarketcap.com provides every of its user with the most recent price of coin in the crypto space. Since they work together with some popular and active exchanges, they update the recent price of a coin in less or more than 5 minutes interval depending on how people are trading this coin. Price of coin actually changes with respect to how much of it is being traded (bought and sold) at a specific time.

I'll first love to explain Watchlist and Portfolio as useful features that helps traders and crypto users before i proceed to other great features:

PicsArt_07-09-12.09.07.jpg

Watchlist : This feature let's traders or crypto users to list their coins and keep a watch on the day to day growth of this coin in the crypto market before investing money in the coin.

Portfolio : This great feature helps traders to list the crypto coins they are holding or investing on while watching the growth of these crypto coins. Such a great feature ... So lovely..

Some other information from coinmarketcap.com that makes more meaning and are of great importance to a trader or crypto users are listed below

PicsArt_07-09-12.13.19.jpg

Under the Cryptocurrencies category are several good and detailed information among which are

PicsArt_07-09-12.18.42.jpg

Price : Coinmarketcap.com since they work hand in hand with some popular and reliable exchanges, they collect information from their trade data coins, averages the Price of these coins and now updates it on their site. So they always provide traders and crypto users with the most recent price of crypto coins.

PicsArt_07-09-12.22.16.jpg

Market Capitalization : Market capitalization is the total amount or total value of a mined coin. For example the total value of Bitcoin that has been mined is referred to as Market Capitalization. This total value is arrived at by multiplying the sum total amount of coins that are being circulated by the recent price of one of that coin. So mathematically, it can be written as:

Market Cap. = Total Value of a Coin in Circulation x The Price of One of that Coin.

Every coin in coinmarketcap.com is being ranked according to the amount their market capitalization. The coin with the highest Market Cap. is always ranked as #1, the coin with second highest Market Cap. ranks #2 and so on.

From the screenshot above, Bitcoin has the highest amount of Market Cap. $617,600,563 (Billion Dollars).

PicsArt_07-09-12.22.56.jpg

Trading Volume (24h) : Trading volume is simply the sum total of a particular coin being traded on exchanges. For example the amount of BTC traded on Bittrex is worth $100, same BTC traded on Binance at a Dollar worth of $500, Huobi Pro also have people who trade $300 worth of this same BTC. Total trading volume of BTC will be equal to:

Total Trading Volume = $100 + $500 + $300

Total Trading Volume = $900

Coinmarketcap.com gets all this trading data from different active and popular exchanges for the last 24 hours, and add them all together and update it on the site so that traders and crypto users can know how much of a particular coin they intend to trade or hold has been traded over the past 24 hours. As crypto traders we should understand that, the more a coin is traded, the more relevant it becomes.

PicsArt_07-09-12.25.40.jpg

Circulating Supply : When I was in high school, in Economics I was taught that if the supply of a commodity is greater than the demand of that commodity, there will be a decrease in the value of that commodity but if the demand of that commodity is higher than the supply of that commodity, the market value of that commodity will increase.

Circulating supply listed on coinmarketcap.com is to give traders in-depth about how much of this crypto is actually in circulation over a specific time frame.

PicsArt_07-09-12.26.55.jpg

Last 7 days Chart : This very feature allows traders and crypto users to understand the market price movement of a particular coin over the last 7 days. This feature is very important as it guides traders, investors or crypto users on how bearish or bullish the price of an asset was over the last 7 days.

As seen from the screenshot above, this feature shows the HEALTH status for BTC only which is 899.

PicsArt_07-09-12.51.16.jpg

Analysis: This feature gives information about the Token Summary of a crypto coin in a demographic manner and shows the Actionable Signals which will help users to know the on-chain sentiment of a coin. But I think it is only available for bitcoin.

PicsArt_07-09-12.57.00.jpg

Amongst the various core features available in coinmarketcap.com as shown in the screenshot above, I will be looking into 5 of them as demanded.

PicsArt_07-09-12.58.14.jpg

Cryptocurrencies: This is the number one core feature in coinmarketcap.com. This feature lists all the crypto coins available in coinmarketcap.com. Clicking on it will display some other sub-features which listed below..

  • Ranking

Because of the demand of the question, I will only explain the first two.

PicsArt_07-09-01.03.15.jpg

Ranking: This sub-feature of cryptocurrencies displays crypto coins in ascending order of the one that has the highest Market Cap value as #1, followed by the crypto coin with the second highest Market Cap value as #2 and so on.

Bitcoin which is the mother of all coins is ranked as #1, Ethereum follows as #2 and the list continues.

PicsArt_07-09-01.01.28.jpg

Recently Added: This sub-feature of Cryptocurrencies displays the list of all cryptos that are added to coinmarketcap.com recently.

As seen above, there are various coins that were added few hours ago, some were added one day ago. See screenshot above.

PicsArt_07-10-04.06.01.jpg

Exchanges: This core feature displays the list of some Exchanges where the listed crypto currencies can be traded.
There are also some few sub-features under Exchanges which are very important.
They are;

  • Spot
  • Derivatives
  • DEX
  • Where to Buy

PicsArt_07-10-04.08.20.jpg

Spot: Spot is a type of trading that involves exchanging one particular crypto for another crypto in the Exchange. Since it is not every Exchange that allows spot trading, the Spot sub-feature of Exchanges displays the list of exchanges that allows for spot trading.

This Spot feature has so many important details which a trader needs to know. These details are;

  • Name of Exchanges
  • Exchange score
  • Volume (24h)
  • Average Liquidity
  • Weekly visits, etc.

Tapping one or any of the listed Exchanges will display the trading pairs which can be found in an Exchange.

5. Coinmarketcap.com Coin Listing Criteria

There are certain criteria for which coins get listed on coinmarketcap.com.

  • There must be an official website to which this coin can be traced so as to ensure credibility and accountability of the coin.

  • The coin has to be minable. So there must be a consensus algorithm to which the coin is subscribed to.

  • For the purpose of the coin to prove its trustworthiness, it must have an exchange on which it can be traded.

  • There must be a spoke person to which the coinmarketcap.com team can get in contact with.

Meeting these criteria, the coin issuer can now proceed to filling the application form, even the above criteria are really not a complete guarantee that the coin will be listed .

There are different categories of listing.

  1. Inactive Listing: This coins are just listed on coinmarketcap but since there is no trustworthy exchange where they are actively trading, they are being sidelined as inactive in the coinmarketcap.com inactive list.
But they can always be reactivated if the project issuers can find a way of getting this coin to trade in any one of the trustworthy exchange listed by coinmarketcap.com.

2. Unverified Listing : These are coins that are yet to undergo checks by the coinmarketcap team.

3. Untracked Listing : Coinmarketcap.com list some coins in this category when they are able meet some of the evaluation measures but could not meet up with the listing guidelines.

4 Tracked Listing : Coinmarketcap.com categorize coins in this listing when able to meet up with the listing guidelines criteria and also able to meet up with perhaps some of the evaluation measures.

6. How or when Coinmarketcap.com decides to list Exchange?

These are some of the criteria exchanges need to meet before they are listed in coinmarketcap.com:

  • The very first and ideal criteria which is like the most common of all criteria is the exchange having a website where salient information about them can be found there.

  • Provide convincing and verifiable information in details containing the Dollar worth and of each crypto asset and also how much of each crypto coin was traded the past one day, that is 24hours.

  • Since it is very possible for any exchange to stop functioning due to some constraints, coinmarketcap.com sets a duration of existence for them which is 60 days. This means that any exchange that wishes to be listed in coinmarketcap.com must have been actively in operation for the last 60 days, that is 2 months.

  • The purpose of exchanges being in existence is to allow for trading. So for an exchange to be qualified for listing, they must have people purchase and also sell using the order book except for some reasons which can always undergo scrutiny.

  • Since trading is done in pairs, any exchange that wishes to be listed must provide traders with a clear list of trading pairs of each or all crypto coin available..

  • Must have a spokesperson who will always stand out for them should in case coinmarketcap.com need clarifications.

    3W72119s5BjVs3Hye1oHX44R9EcpQD5C9xXzj68nJaq3CeFGHg4aXRoSVKBjAah2jfmhpobj1ieDNV9hazM4y1pgK3cN2fQ3NkvnE8p4sNkk847PojWAMt.png

7. What is the purpose of the Uniswap feature on the Coinmarketcap.com site and how a trader can use it?

Coinmarketcap.com has proven to be a great and easy to use site without much hassles.

It provides users with the Uniswap feature so that they can just stay on the site and swap their ERC-20 tokens without having to involve any third party to help them verify anything. Every ERC-20 swap is just on the go with just a click on Uniswap feature.

8. What is Blockchain Explorer?

Block Explorer is a digital tool that is used to search for detailed information about cryptocurrencies. It can otherwise be referred to as the search engine for cryptocurrencies. Just like Google use the search engine on the Internet, Block Explorer serves the same search engine purpose in the crypto space.

Information that can be seen on the explorer

There are millions of information embedded in the Google of Cryptocurrencies (Block Explorer). Some of which are...

  • Transaction destination
