Data is key, in fact, we can call the new crude of the 20th century as it is what determines our consumed contents, the latest application created, and so on. Why is this possible?
With the rise in technology, private companies started making waves in the industry creating what we needed and at this point, they needed to keep records of activities so every activity on the internet is stored in single data storage. Keeping these data wouldn't have been an issue if they were stored and not used for selfish purposes and could not be harnessed in raw form. With a centralized social media, there is only one repository of data as well as what is done with the data is decided by a central entity making our data, not ours again since we do not have the right to them. Well, we often sign this out to this centralized platform in a long list of over 100 pages of boring terms of service which we do not read but just click so we can enjoy the services they provide.

Steemit, the Facebook Killer
Steemit is a decentralized platform and in contrast to a centralized platform like Facebook, there is no centralized repository where data is saved. Built on the blockchain, it is completely decentralized making it sure that nobody owns the blockchain and there is no centralized authority. A list of witnesses is chosen and these witnesses can be removed if they do not do what they are expected. Unlike Facebook where every data including password is stored, with Steemit, passwords are not saved and if users lose the password, then they cannot get it back.
Unlike the centralized platform (Facebook) where data is collected from users and utilized for its selfish gains, Steemit creates a new tokenomics which rewards users for contributing to its platform. Steemit rewards users with Steem, SBD Steem Power, and recently TRX.
With the Blockchain's security and cryptographic protection, you remain in control of your content and can remain anonymous to every other person. Thanks to the tamper-proof characteristic of the blockchain, data cannot be stolen and you completely own your data.
Conclusion
The world will move to decentralization in the nearest future. This is visible as Facebook is already looking into the blockchain. Soon, having our data saved on different nodes on the blockchain will be a thing to reckon with by everyone.

Facebook as a Centralized Platform
I will look at one centralized company which has been in the light of misusing the data of users; Facebook. Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg have been summoned severally in several countries over data bridge or the use of peoples' data for personal/selfish purposes. In fact, it was shown that Facebook sells users' data for political purposes so as to determine the direction of an election win.
When a person inputs any word into Facebook, the data is stored in a central data storage base and this is what Facebook uses for advertising purposes as we know that Facebook is into advertising and the social media is free. Although privacy is supposed to be an innate human right since our data is ours but with Facebook, privacy is very far since the company always tries to beat its way around with several privacy policies which don't guarantee security.
Thank You
