Welcome to my homework post for Respected Professor @yohan2on who has delivered a lecture about Internet of Things (IoT) and it is quite interesting that how it will work in the future. What improvements can be expected in it in the future?

Q. 1. Explain why the future Internet of Things depends on Blockchain.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a term that is used for a system in which computing devices, machines, objects or people are connected with each other and all of these things are provided with Unique Identifiers (UIDs) with the ability to transfer data over a network in which they are interrelated.

All these objects in Internet of Things use web-enabled smart devices with embedded systems on them like sensors and processors. Communication hardware is used to send and collect data from their environment. This sensor data is then shared by the devices through an Iot gateway from where this data is sent to the Cloud that can be the central Storage of this system.

Advantages of Internet of Things.

Following are some of the advantages of IoT.

  1. In IoT system, information can be accessed from anywhere at any time using any device. This is achieved by improved communication between the inter-connected devices.
  2. Data packets can be transferred over the network very easily and within no time. This makes IoT system very cost effective and saves a lot of time.
  3. IoT system uses an environment of automating tasks that help to improve the quality of the services of a business.

Internet of Things and Blockchain Technology.

In this section, we will discuss about the area of IoT where improvement is needed with the help of Blockchain technology. IoT is indeed a system that has brought improvements in lifestyle of people and betterment in the management of businesses, but still there are some areas where improvement can be made and Blockchain Technology can be used for the better results.

Security.

IoT is based on a centralized system where a central cloud system is used to collect and store the data. As we all know, that in a centralized system, data can easily be hacked. So security is an issue in IoT system.

By adoption of Blockchain system, security issue can easily be resolved and betterment can be brought in this system. Blockchain uses cryptographic algorithms, hash functions and smart contracts that are very difficult to be hacked. Moreover, Distributed Ledger technology enables every node to be able to validate the transactions. So by adding Blockchain to IoT system, a secure environment can be achieved.

Scalability.

Scalability is the property of a system through which growing amount of work is handled by the system. So, IoT system is a centralized based system and data from all over the world will increase with the increase in number of devices connected to the system. This can be the cause of scalability issue in a centralized system.

To handle this problem of scalability, Blockchain technology is the best solution. As we know that there are many nodes on a Blockchain all over the world and every node is given copy of the transaction. This creates the environment of Decentralization in which scalability problem is solved. Thus, by adding Blockchain technology to this system, issue of scalability can be resolved and much faster transactions can be carried out without wastage of time.

Cost of Maintenance.

In a centralized network, there is a central system that is used to store and save data. As the number of devices increase, cost of maintenance will increase and it can be very costly.

In Blockchain technology, there is no central system and every node on the network can store and save the copy of every transaction. So there is no need to maintain a central system with huge processors and storage devices. So by introducing Blockchain to IoT system, maintenance cost can be decreased.


Q. 2. Research and create content on the following IoT Blockchain use case.

Filament


Filament PD is a tech company that was founded in December 2012 in the state of Nevada, United States. It manufactures IoT devices which are connected through Blockchain Technology.

Blockchain based hardwares and softwares are incorporated with IoT devices manufactured by this company to overcome the issues faced by IoT devices that have been discussed in the early phase of this post. Filament has adopted Blockchain technology to overcome the issues connected with IoT devices and it is the perfect example of what we have discussed earlier.

Filament has its own Blockchain network that is called Blockclet and it has been applied to overcome the issues of Security, Scalability and speed of data flow. Filament has shared its data with many industries like Transportation, Manufacturing, energy, construction and has developed a decentralized environment using Blocklet network.

Filament claims to have worked with some big brands over the years. You can see the names of the brands in the below screenshot.

Filamnent Microchip.

Filament Microchip is the product of this company which facilitates the transfer of data as well security of the data in tact. Through the use of these chips, data can easily be transferred on Blocklet network. This chip interconnects the different devices to the Blocklet network.

Filament Blocklet Kit.

Filament Blocklet Kit is another product of this company which can be used by any corporation to build its own proof-of-concept blockchain network easily.

Filament adoption in Automobile industry.

Filament has worked with automobile companies where the vehicles are connected with each other on a network through and IoT device. The vehicle history and other valuable information can be tracked through Blocklet Mobility Platform built by the Filament.

Conclusion.

To conclude, it can be said that Internet of Things is a new concept and it is still at its very early stage but it can bring lot of ease in our lives. Through the concept of Interconnected Machinery, IoT can produce data that is required for better management and it will be easy to analyze the data and take decisions accordingly.

Blockchain technology incorporation in IoT will improve its security and scalability issues. Filament is the perfect example of this and it is providing with new innovations like microchips that are working very well to facilitate users. Blockchain incorporation in Internet of Things will improve its efficiency to great extent.
