INTRODUCTION

Blockchain is gradually becoming a global asset with its multiple use cases and its ability to incorporated within multiple institutions/fields. This is largely due to its high security, transparency, reliability and freedom from a central authority. This is why its adoption has surged massively over the years and is becoming the internet of things.

QUESTION 1 - Explain why the future Internet of Things depends on Blockchain

Internet of Things (IoT)

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a network that hosts all physical devices connected to the internet which makes data collection and transferring very easier without any physical contact. This concept was introduced in the year 1999 by Kevin Ashton. The Internet of Things is actually getting place or rank in the crypto ecosystem which will eventually take over and would be largely adopted and used by many countries across the globe.

Some of the general uses or applications of the Internet of Things

  • The Internet of Things is used mainly in our homes via the use of certain mobile devices such s smartphones in interacting with lightning bulbs remotely without having any physical contact with the lightbulb.

  • Again the internet of things is applicable in the management of traffic lights. Traffic lights as we can all see around is not controlled by an individual remotely but instead, it's controlled automatically through the aid of installed Apps that aids in their function.

  • The internet of things also helps farmers in the study and detection of good soil fertility that is suitable for their kind of crop to cultivate.

  • Other areas where the internet of things is used include; automobiles, security places, health areas, etc.

The Blockchain technology and Internet of Things (IoT)

As we all know the Blockchain is a decentralized network that functions using Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). The Internet of Things (IoT) on the contrary is a centralized network that processes data and also the transfer of transactions within the internet of things network between two or more devices. The blockchain is characterized by some features which include; scalability, decentralization, immutability, enhanced security, etc. I would like to throw more light on the ways in which the internet of things depends on the blockchain using the aforementioned features of blockchain.

  • Decentralized:- Activities of the IoT are enhanced as a result of the decentralized nature of blockchain technology. This is experienced when distributed nodes interact with each other in sharing and transferring data easily. Thus, this tends to increase the activities or transaction processing on the Internet of Things network.

  • Scalability:- As we know that the scalability of the blockchain network is very high and as such when blockchain is connected to the functioning of the Internet of Things, there would be much improvement in the running of the IoT network which would aid reduce the lags in the network during the transfer of data.

  • Enhanced Security:- Blockchain technology uses cryptographic encryption in providing highly enhanced security on its network. The security level of the Internet of Things is very low and this makes it prone to online attacks. With the id of the use of the cryptographic encryption used by blockchain to provide a high-security level, when IoT is being operated on blockchain networks, there would be the reduction of these prone to online attacks and also enhance high-security level on Internet of Things network.

  • Immutability:- Immutability refers to the process whereby data stored on a blockchain can not be altered or deleted. As we all know that the Internet of Things it being prone to hackers when they get hacked would totally seize the possession of the device from the owner and s such a huge loss follows. Operating the internet of things with the blockchain and network would help to permanently store data or information on the IoT network.

QUESTION 2 - Research and create content on the following IoT Blockchain use case. Filament

The Filament IoT

The Filament was founded in the year 2012 by the co-founder and CEO Allison Clift-Jennings. It is an IoT company that was founded in Reno, Nevada. The company has been developing certain sensor packages which permit physical devices to be connected to the internet and improves the activities of humans remotely. Currently, Filament has developed a Blocklet chip that helps the internet of things network to depend advantageously on the benefits of blockchain in improving the products of the network. Filament enables users to make IoT blockchain transactions, ensures high security of data, and also ensures faster transactions as well.

Some use cases of The Filament IoT

  • Automobile Industry:- This is a use case of filament in which automobiles parts are installed with Filament Internet of Things blocket chip. This IoT equipped in the vehicles allows the vehicles to have interacted with each other via the blockchain in transferring, and receiving data within the network. This has improved the transfer and sharing of data in a secured and fast manner and also saves money and time as well.

  • Manufacturing and Logistics Industry:- The Filament microchip has made it very easy for companies to connect industrial devices and shipping containers together for easy interaction with each other. Through the aid of the filament blocket chip, recordings and arrangement of transits can be done by the shipping containers without any physical contact with them.
Filament also aids manufacturing companies to record and share data with connected devices when filament chip is connected with each other. This makes it easier for companies to transfer their data with other industrial devices connected without making any physical contact with that.

  • Improvement in Scalability:- The filament Internet of Things hardware is connected to the blockchain network which makes has improved its scalability as compared to the normal IoT. Filament IoT effectively runs at a high speed and also with high efficiency due to its dependence connection with the blockchain.

  • Filament IoT Blockchain Hardware:- The hardware of filament is connected to the blockchain in a way that devices are connected to other devices which operate on the blockchain and provides effective transactions and transfer of data in a very secured manner. A good example is the use of the Blocklet USD Enclave which when connected to any device of USD compatibility, the server would have access to all operations on the blockchain. The Filament Internet of Things is built such that, unique identification, unique keys, and unique transactions can be performed on the blockchain without any difficulty.

CONCLUSION

We looked at the concept of the Internet of Things where we said this concept was developed by Kevin Ashton in the year 1999. We also discussed some of the features of IoT and we also looked at some of the general uses or applications of the Internet of Things in general. Moreover, we discussed the future of the Internet of Things and its dependency on the Blockchain network where we discussed the decentralized nature, scalability, immutability, and enhancement of security in blockchain and how it would affect the IoT when connect to it.

In the filament Internet of Things, we touched on the use cases or applications of the Filament Internet of Things blockchain. We also addressed how the filament IoT is connected with automobiles and how it aids it in its operation. We also looked at the scalability of its operation with the blockchain when connected to other devices.
