Proof of brain can be defined as the issuing of rewards to the Steemit curators and authors, which is done in the Steemit blockchain. In Steemit an Author is required to create a good quality content and it must authentic, genuine so as to get rewards from the system, Having done so, the content might get the attention of the curators and also other users who find it interesting to Upvote it. Whereby if any user should go against the rules of the system they would be down voted, with no rewards.
65% reward pool goes to the authors and creators of contents, with the author receiving 50%, then 50% is divided amongst the curators in the amount of their (SP) Steem power.
On the Steemit blockchain everyone have access and capacity to vote a content, is also known as curation. For instance if I come across a post, and I find it interesting to me, I would Upvote the post and the author would receive the reward from the post after 7 days.
Curation is of great benefit, it profits both curators and content creator, both earns from it. The value of a vote in the Steemit blockchain, is based on the steem power (SP) the voter possess, voting mana and also not forgetting the time the post was upvoted in relation to when the post was created.
In the Steemit platform, it allows only original, quality, and spam / plagiarism free contents. If there should be any, the content would be downvoted or not voted on. The downvote weight is based on the curators SP and voting mana.
Curation is of good help in rewarding quality contents on the platform.
Building your SP as a steemian is a good behavior and has many benefits that come along with it.

Some people on the Steemit platform likes upvoting themselves, sometimes as a result of not getting votes on their post.. sometimes I Upvote my post too. But the main thing is that self Upvote is not encouraging, it puts an end to the proof of brain mechanism. It demands that others after ascertaining the quality of a content, then voting follows. And not an author Upvoting him/her self if so the proof of brain mechanism is abolished.
Therefore self Upvote shouldn't be encouraged at all because it would not contribute to the development of the platform.
