What is SP?

Good day to you all,

Since becoming a member of steemit and reading through the platform, i have been seeing references to SP.

In some instances, one is required to have a certain volume of SP to participate in some activities.

So, i would like to be educated on the following:

  1. What is an SP?
  2. What is the function of an SP?
  3. How does one acquire an SP?
