Steemit Crypto Academy Week 6 Task: Steem Blockchain(Convergent Linear Reward) | lecture by @sapwood

Introduction

Hello guys,
I must say it is a pleasure on my part to be a partaker of this lecture. Honestly, I have leant a whole lot from our very professor in the person of @sapwood. He has educated me much on all about the reward in steemit blockchain. I have also learnt about the convergent liner reward.

His lecture covered the first way of rewarding users to the present way of rewarding users. Recall that from his lecture the first method which the reward graph took was quadratic/linear equation which has the function f(x)= x2 and this was in the year 2016. In the year 2017 also because of the deficiencies of the first function, another function was introduced I.e f(x)=x. Also, the deficiencies of these functions gave rise to what we know today as the convergent linear equation I.e f(x)= x2/(x+1).

What are the economic & social ramifications of self-upvote in Steem Blockchain? Do you gain better curation rewards by upvoting others as compared to self-upvote? (Include real examples)

In my view, self-voting is not a good practice at all. The reason is that you as the author will never judge your content wrongly. One of my lecturers told me to always give my work or project to my enemy to criticise because it's only then that I will be able to grow. Economically, self-vote will only bring but very little or no reward in the end since it didn't make any positive impact on the community. We all know that for a post to be on the trending view in any community it has to be curated by other readers. It's only then that the content can be accepted and recommended to other users to make it a working tool. E.g the new comer's guide, the notice board etc. When talking about curation, self voting should not be considered.

For one to gain a very good reward, he or she must always upvote others rather than self voting. E.g Below is a screenshot of my self-voted post and the curation reward and also the curation reward I got while voting for others.

Self-voted content

The above screenshot shows my self-vote activity on my post with an upvote value of $0.03 and the curation reward is just 0.039 SP.

Upvote on other user content

The screenshot was an upvote I made on @steemitfood, as you can see in the first one the upvote value was $0.03 and the reward was 0.039 but on these, the upvote value was increased to $0.06 and the reward was 0.044 SP. You will agree with me that it looks much bigger than the self upvote.

What is the difference between isolated judgment and community judgment in curation? How do you adapt to community judgment on quality content in Steem Blockchain? Does that bring economic incentive for you? If yes, explain with real examples, (include screenshots and compare them with your isolated judgment)?

Isolated judgment is a decision I made on my own to upvote content that I believed to be of high quality, at that point I have no other curators on it as it was me that decided to upvote, with my upvote value remains just the way it is according to the amount of the SP I possess, while, Community judgment is the process by which I curate highly quality post together with other curators and in this case the upvote value on the post increases and also increases individual curation rewards expected by all curators that upvoted the content.

As curation plays a very important role in better content discovery on the Steem blockchain such that after curation, the quality posts are shown on the trending contents of the community enabling other users to learn from it and also curate such contents. Trending posts in a community is the best way to adapt to community judgment on quality contents in Steem Blockchain after it must have received quality upvotes from curators that found it worthy.

Community judgment brings better upvote value and curation rewards on quality content compared to isolated judgment.

Community Judgment

Community judgment- Before upvote

Screenshot_2021-03-18-17-18-32-91.jpg

Community judgment- After upvote

Screenshot 1 above shows a post of the value of the total upvote of $37.47 on it. From Screenshot 2, I upvoted it and the total upvote value on it turned to $37.60, that’s a $0.13 difference and remember my upvote value is just $0.03 but community judgment has increased my upvote impact value so therefore my curation reward will be increased.

Go to Steemworld.org, check your Upvote value( at the current SP, VP). Take a screenshot. Then go to the Steemit trending page, find a post with a payout of more than $10 but less than $50(Age less than 6 Days 12 hrs). Upvote it. Take screenshots before and after upvote. Similarly, go to another post on the Trending page, find a post with a payout of more than $100( Age less than 6 Days 12 Hrs). Upvote it. Take screenshots before and after upvote. Tell the differences between the two. Which one has produced a greater Upvote value & Curation reward for you with the same resources(SP, VP)? Explain?

I navigated to steemworld.org. With my effective SP, I have an upvote value to be $0.03.

Screenshot_2021-03-18-17-29-04-86.jpg

My upvote value $0.03

The post with an existing payout of $37.47 becomes $37.60 after I upvoted it. With that, my upvote value on that post is $0.13 which could not be achieved with isolation judgment. I will it in the screenshots below. (Note: The post is less than 6days 12hrs).

Screenshot_2021-03-18-17-18-12-52.jpg

Before my upvote- $37.47

Screenshot_2021-03-18-17-18-32-91.jpg

After my upvote- $37.60 (+$0.13)

To calculate my expected curation reward- PCreward = 1/2 * √PT * (√P1 - √P0)∆t

Where PT = Post payout after at the end of 7 days.

P1 = Post payout after upvote

P0 = Post payout before upvote

∆t = 1, for I, votes after 5mins.

Therefore, PCreward = 1/2 * √37.60 * (√37.60 - √37.47) = $0.031

My curation reward for this = $0.031

Also for the post with an initial payout of $292.26 increased to $292.38 (increased with $0.12) after I upvoted it and it will be shown in screenshots below. (Note: The post is less than 6days 12hrs).

Screenshot_2021-03-18-17-25-25-00.jpg

Before my upvote- $292.26

Screenshot_2021-03-18-17-25-57-54.jpg

After my upvote- $292.38 (+$0.12)

To calculate my expected curation reward for this following the same method- PCreward = 1/2 * √PT * (√P1 - √P0)∆t

Where PT = Post payout after at the end of 7 days.

P1 = Post payout after upvote

P0 = Post payout before upvote

∆t = 1, for I, votes after 5mins.

Therefore, PCreward = 1/2 * √292.38 * (√292.38- √292.26) = $0.029

My curation reward for this = $0.029

Reward difference

To me, the first post gave me more curation reward than the first. For now, am still trying to understand the reason why it is so and I will love the professor to please help me on these as am a bit confused here.

Conclusion

Finally, you will agree with me that self-vote does not add value to the content of your write up as a person. It doesn't judge your content perfectly. My humble suggestion is that we should try and avoid self upvote as it doesn't give a good meaning to our content. Thanks to professor @sapwood for this great lecture and I look forward to learning more subsequently.
