My submission for homework task by @yohan2on which is about comparison of one centralised and decentralised app in any of the below mentioned categories. I am writing about steemit and facebook which fall under social media category.
Homework Task:
Compare and Contrast between a Centralized and a Decentralized application under any of these categories social media, Browsers, Gaming, Finance, Gambling, file Storage, Trading, Charity, etc.
Facebook is a California based centralised social media networking site. Basically facebook. Inc is a company and facebook is flagship site of the company. For the sake of this task, we will be talking of social media site only. It was launched by Mark Zuckerberg and some of his fellow colleagues of Harvard University . Initially it was launched for only Harvard students but later its membership was expanded. As of now, it has billions of users worldwide.
On facebook, we can share our posts, vedios, photos, links, commemt on other posts, share other posts, like posts . Here we can also chat with someone in an inbox. As for privacy on Facebook is concerned, first thing to be understood is that, it is a centralised network. The data we share is going to a company that owns it and they have absolute control over our account. They can delete / block our account for voilating their terms of sservice. They also reserve the right to remove / delete posts from our timeline without our consent. Even they have access to our chats which we do in our inbox. Second pereapective which we should look at is about privacy concerning our posts which we share. Here we get options to share our posts and other info with whom we want like we can set it to " Only me " , " Friends", " Friends of friends".
Steemit
Steemit is a decentralized social media platform build on steem blockchain . It was founded by Ned Scott and blockchain developer Dan Larime in 2016. Steemit uses STEEM to rewards its users for creating and curting content. Being decentralized there is no central authority to regulate your content. Here the information shared on profile is visible to all the steemit users. The posts that we share are also visible to all users, you cannot post for specific group of people like friends only or to yourself only. Here usees have voting power proportionate to the steem they have in their accout. With the recent integration of TRON with steem , users also get rewarded in the form of TRX and Steem in the rario of 1:1.
Compare and Contrast Facebook and Steemit.
Sreemit is a decentralized platform where aa facebook is a centralised platform. Therefore, steemit is more secure than facebook.
Steemit rewards its users in the form of Steem/SBD and TRON for creating and curating content contrary to facebook where we like and comment on posts without being rewarded.
Once you register on steemit your account cannot be deleted unlike facebook where your account can be deleted by the company or violating their terms of service. Facebook can alao delete your blog posts without your consent, however , on steemit only you have the right to edit your post and not delete it permanently.
For posting on steemit, content tags are mandatory so that your post can be seen by everyone on steemit when search for the same tag is made. Here you cannot restrict your sharing with your friends or with yourself only.
Steemit promote learning on diverse range of topics . By using desired tags, bulk of content can be found to curate /study/learn. Such selection is not possible on Facebook.
Facebook being in partnership with amny other companies like whatsapp, Amazon etc share our data with them too without your consent. It can be understood by taking an example, when you search some product on Amazon, that product comes on Facebook too. It is becoming possible because facebook is sharing your data with amazon too. Such unauthorised data sharing is not known on steemit.
Facebook is a better medium of communication than steemit. On facebook, we can chat with someone in our inbox which is not the case on steemit.
Facebook allows you to lock your profile and restrict access to your content that is not seen on steemit.
Steemit is purely a blogging site while as Facebook is used for many other purposes like News, advertisement (business, political, social etc) etc as well.
teemit demands original content from you and plagiarism is highly disliked and frowned upon. In case of copy / paste or taking help from existing content online, mentioning source is mandatory. Facebook has no such limitations.
Thanks @yohan2on
