The simply way to define holiness is complete obedience of God. In Luke 6:64, Jesus said "For what reason do you call Me Lord when you do not do those things that I command you?"
The proof that Jesus is truly Lord to you in spirit and in truth is doing whatever He instructs you, Holiness is obedience: not just a partial obedience but complete obedience.
In 1 Samuel 15:16-23, Samuel declared to Saul that to obey God is better than sacrifice. While carrying on with a sacrificial life in service of God has its place, it's not something you can use to replace obedience.
In Revelation 3:15-16, God says that it is better you submit to Him totally or you do not obey Him at all. He said this because His nature of holiness orders full compliance from these who are partakers of His heavenly nature.
