WHY CALL IT GOOD FRIDAY?

Christians all over the world use the day called “GOOD FRIDAY” to remind us of the day Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross of Calvary.

The question is, why call it “good Friday instead of a day of suffering and death of Jesus Christ? A day of horror.

As terrible as the day was, it marked the dramatic culmination of God’s plan to save his people from their sins. It’s a very special day because without the crucifixion there would be no resurrection, and without the resurrection there would be no Christianity. You see, without this day there would be no third day. A day of anguish for Jesus Christ, but a day the price for our offences were paid.

Prophet Isaiah has these to say about Christ’s suffering and death in his book, Chapter 53.3-10

That Jesus Christ was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of sorrows, and familiar with pain. He was despised, and we held him in low esteem. Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way;
and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished. He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

All that happened to Jesus Christ on the Friday called “Good” was in accordance with the scriptures for the good of mankind who will believe in the report of Isaiah chapter 53.
As I stated above, without Good Friday there will be no third day, Christ’s resurrection day. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the very foundation of our faith. To a Christian, the most significant day in history is the day that Jesus Christ rose from the dead, having conquered death, hell and the grave. But without His death there could be no resurrection from the dead, which is why Good Friday is so important.

The good news of salvation only makes sense once we see how we are enslaved.

Romans 5:6-10 (NIV)

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
