Bangladesh Krishi Unnayan Corporation (BADC) is not abiding by the price fixed by the government. The Department of Agriculture Marketing, which regulates the market for agricultural products, has fixed the price of 1 kg of potatoes at Tk 28 at the cold storage level. But BADC is selling their certified 1 kg potato seeds to the farmers for Tk 48. For this the farmer has to pay more than 21 rupees per kg. Last season, BADC sold 1 kg of Asteric and Carriage varieties of certified potato seeds to the farmers for Tk 28. This time the company is selling the potatoes to the farmers at Tk 48 per kg.

The demand for seed potatoes in the Bogra region (Bogra and Joypurhat) this season is 1 lakh 35 thousand metric tons. BADC is supplying 4,046 metric tons of certified potato seeds to the farmers. Although BADC is hoping for higher seed prices in the market, farmers are disappointed with the supply shortage. The storage situation of seed potatoes in the cold storage is also disappointing. Farmers are fearing a potato seed crisis this season. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, Bogra and Joypurhat districts are famous for potato production areas. There is a demand of 75,000 metric tons of potato seeds for potato cultivation in 56,000 hectares of land in Bogra district this season. Of this, about 20,000 metric tons of potato has been sent to BADC from the Department of Agriculture.
