"He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper"(Psalm 1:3)
The first verse of Psalm 1 tells us what we must not do. The second verse tells us what we must do. The third verse tells us what happens when we obey the first two verses. The result is that we will become fruitful in our lives.
This year, we are trusting the Lord to make our lives fruitful. We want our lives to be productive on all levels. Our passage for today sets out four indicators of an abundant life:
Tree planted by the waters. The fruitful life is likened to a tree planted by the rivers of water. The term ‘rivers of water’ refers to an irrigation system. In the drylands of the Old Testament, water was scarce – especially water from rivers. To water their plants, farmers dug wells and created irrigation systems out of them. A tree planted by an irrigated water system was always watered, no matter the season. A fruitful person is a person who is continuously refreshed by God’s living waters.
Leaves that do not wither. The leaves represent activities. Because a fruitful person is always watered, he or she always has the strength to do what has to be done. They do not get weary and dried up. When others become weak and faint because of a harsh dry season, the tree planted by the rivers of water continues to look fresh. When we are planted in the Lord, that is how we are. We walk and run without getting weary. Our leaves do not wither.
Fruits are borne in season. Fruits represent results. When a tree does not have a water source, it may still stand but fail to yield fruit at the fruit-bearing season. There is always the right time for bearing fruit. The fruitful person produces results when it is time. The Lord rewards their labour.
Prospering in all we do. The fruitful person produces results in all areas of life. They produce spiritual fruit and natural fruit. Every area of their life is productive. That is what the Lord wants for us this year. He wants all areas of our lives to do well.
In 2021, we must be like the tree planted by the rivers of waters and bear fruit.
