En las escrituras el único, que menciona la estrella de Navidad o de Belén, es Mateo. Plantea que la estrella precedía a los reyes magos hasta que se paró encima del sitio donde estaba el niño Jesús. Ya en la antigüedad se defendía a la estrella como verdadera.

El teólogo orígenes en los años 185-253 mencionaba que estaba próxima a la naturaleza de los cometas. Muchas hipótesis aparecieron para describir el milagro de la estrella de Belén, tratándolo como un fenómeno astronómico real. Una declaración apuntan al brillante mundo Venus, pero este mundo ya era conocido en esos tiempos, difícilmente ha podido ser tomado como algo extraordinario.
