Ananias and Sapphira made that mistake.
They both lied. But little did they know that they didn't lie unto men but unto God and the Holy Spirit.
This simple act led them to their grave.
Looking at the book of Acts 5:1-6 we can draw a lesson from what Ananias and Sapphira did.
KJV: But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
AMP: But a certain man named Ananias with his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property,
2
KJV: And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
AMP: And with his wife’s knowledge and connivance he kept back and wrongfully appropriated some of the proceeds, bringing only a part and putting it at the feet of the apostles.
3
KJV: But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost and to keep back part of the price of the land?
AMP: But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart that you should lie to and attempt to deceive the Holy Spirit, and should [in violation of your promise] withdraw secretly and appropriate to your own use part of the price from the sale of the land?
4
KJV: Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
AMP: As long as it remained unsold, was it not still your own? And [even] after it was sold, was not [the money] at your disposal and under your control? Why then, is it that you have proposed and purposed in your heart to do this thing? [How could you have the heart to do such a deed?] You have not [simply] lied to men [playing false and showing yourself utterly deceitful] but to God.
5
KJV: And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
AMP: Upon hearing these words, Ananias fell down and died. And great dread and terror took possession of all who heard of it.
6
KJV: And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
AMP: And the young men arose and wrapped up [the body] and carried it out and buried it.
Ananias gave satan the chance in his heart and this made him conspire with his wife to lie to Peter not knowing that he didn't lie unto Peter but unto the Holy Spirit.
And their existence was cut short because of this.
Sapphira his wife did the same thing, she lied to Peter not knowing what had befallen her husband Ananias. Immediately she also responded with a lie, the same fate of her husband also became hers.
We have seen what lying unto the Holy Spirit caused Ananias and Sapphira; their life.
Now, how many times do we believers lie to men and we feel we are only lying to men and not God? Little do we know that whosoever lies sin against God and not man.
Let's look at ourselves again and be sure we aren't victims of lying unto the Holy Spirit.
Remember that the Holy Spirit cannot be deceived. Change and commit your ways unto God so that you won't end up like Ananias and Sapphira.
STAY BLESS!
Shalom!
