The Council of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) strongly condemned the actions of Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine

The organization decided to freeze Russia's status for an indefinite period and forbade starting any new projects with the Russian government and Russian institutions.

Russia's cooperation with CERN began back in Soviet times, when Soviet physicists came to work on accelerators.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, cooperation between Russia and CERN was regulated by a bilateral agreement signed on October 30, 1993, as well as protocols to it.

Russian scientists and engineers have made a significant contribution to the design and construction of the Large Hadron Collider.

Russia had an observer status at CERN, which meant that the Russian Federation did not pay contributions to the organization's budget, could not vote on the CERN board, but could participate in research projects with both finances and equipment.

In 2012, the Russian side applied for associate membership, this status gave the opportunity to attend meetings of the Council without the right to vote, the right to participate in tenders for the supply of equipment, but it was necessary to pay ten million euros per year.

In March 2018, the Russian Federation withdrew its application for membership.

At that time, officials said that relations between Russia and CERN would be determined by an updated bilateral agreement.

The new agreement was signed in April 2019, it stated that Russia is still interested in participating in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider and in the program for the modernization of this accelerator, in the development of next generation colliders.

CERN, in turn, stated that it would like to participate in Russian projects in the field of nuclear physics and particle physics; in particular, in experiments at the PIK reactor and the electron-positron collider at the Siberian Institute named after Budker.

After the invasion of Ukraine, hundreds of Russian physicists working in CERN collaborations signed an open letter (the list of signatories has been removed following recent amendments to Russian laws).

In the letter, they protested against the actions of the Russian leadership and expressed solidarity with the petition of Russian scientists and journalists, published on the website of the Troitsky Variant newspaper.

The Council of CERN, in its resolution, stated that it would promote initiatives aimed at supporting Ukrainian researchers and Ukrainian projects in the field of high energy physics.

At the same time, Russia is deprived of its observer status in the organization for an indefinite period, no new projects with the Russian Federation and Russian organizations can be started.

The document states that the CERN management will comply with the regime of international sanctions imposed on Russia.

At the same time, CERN expresses its support to the representatives of the Russian scientific community who protested against the hostilities.
