The global average air temperature exceeded 17 degrees Celsius for the first time on July 3, 2023.
This made it potentially the hottest day on record (the record is subject to confirmation from the World Meteorological Organization).
However, already on July 4, the record was updated: the average temperature rose to 17.18 degrees Celsius.
The observational data came from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The average world temperature is considered to be the daily average of all measurement points on the planet at a height of two meters.
The previous record was an average temperature of 16.92 degrees Celsius, which it reached in August 2016 and July 2022.
This July may bring new records, thanks to El Niño, which began in June of this year.
