Russia just launched the module Nauka, the first new module of the ISS Russian segment in 11 years, using the Proton-M launch vehicle.
The module will be used to conduct scientific experiments as well as keep the station running.
The docking with the ISS will take place on July 29. Nauka means “Science” in English.
The Science module has two main purposes. First, it will be used for scientific experiments, some of which are already planned.
A centrifuge will be installed in the module, which will create an artificial gravity and study the effect of its different values on the development of embryos.
Secondly, the module carries a lot of service equipment to maintain the station and the life of the astronauts
Nauka’s equipment includes the attitude control system of the station, the system for pumping fuel from the arriving Progress ship, water and oxygen generation devices, and a docking unit for spacecrafts.
In addition, a robotic arm created by ESA will be installed on the outside of the module.
Initially, Nauka was supposed to fly to the station in 2007, but the launch was repeatedly postponed for several reasons.
The main reason was a manufacturing defect that left metal chips in the fuel system. Removing it from the tanks and pipelines turned out to be a difficult technological task.
However, now the module is traveling through space. Nauka was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome at 17:58 local time, using the Proton-M rocket.
The launch into the initial orbit with parameters 190 by 350 kilometers took just over nine minutes, after which the third stage of the Proton separated.
In the following days, Roskosmos specialists will check the operability and, if successful, will issue a command to undock the Pirs docking module from the ISS.
The docking of the "Science" module with the ISS is scheduled for July 29.
