Blue Origin experienced an accident during the last unmanned flight of its New Shepard suborbital rocket.
After a malfunction in the engine, the emergency rescue system worked, which successfully took the capsule away from the faulty booster.
The company has not yet explained the reasons for the incident.
The New Shepard is a single-stage rocket developed by Blue Origin for space tourism and suborbital exploration.
It consists of an accelerator with one hydrogen engine and a capsule designed for six people.
During takeoff, the booster accelerates the capsule and separates, after which the capsule rises to about 110 kilometers crossing the boundary of space.
Then both parts of the system return to the ground: the booster lands on a jet engine, and the capsule on a parachute.
Because the New Shepard is a people-carrying rocket, it has an abort system.
The system monitors the status of the rocket and, in the event of a critical failure, activates a powerful engine under the capsule.
The booster quickly takes the capsule away from the rocket, which is in a potentially dangerous state.
THE ACCIDENT
Blue Origin had successfully tested the system twice before, and during the NS-23 mission, it had to be activated for the first time due to a real accident.
Fortunately, this mission took place without a crew.
Instead, the company placed 23 scientific experiments in the capsule and on its outer surface.
The New Shepard is a fully reusable system and this was the ninth flight of the rocket and capsule.
Initially, the flight was normal, but a minute after takeoff, the rocket engine first began to produce a much larger flame.
Then the rocket began to roll, after which the capsule's emergency rescue system worked.
Engine problems occurred almost at the moment of greatest aerodynamic drag.
During this time, the rocket is under the most load on its structure, so the engine briefly reduces thrust to soften the forces acting on the rocket
Then returns to normal operation until it comes to a stop before separation.
After the accident, the capsule deployed its parachutes and landed successfully.
The Jeff Bezos company hasn't yet published what happened to the accelerator.
Considering the possibly fired engine, and the fact that this time the company did not show the landing of the rocket, it can be assumed that it collapsed.
However, it is a good sign the emergency rescue system worked as intended.
