I watched this great video that had me seriously thinking about alien life in our galaxy. Where are all the aliens despite the vastness of the Milky Way and out universe at large?
We have been actively searching for ETs for approximately 60-years, and have been unable to find aliens. Fermi proposed the notion of a "great filter" that may stop advanced civilizations from advancing.
According to the Kardashev scale, civilizations are classified by their energy usage as type 1-3. We are not even a type-1 civilization based on our usage of only 0.1% of the energy that hits our planet. If civilizations are more advanced they may simply avoid us, and if they are less-advanced we may never be able to see them, as the Milky Way is spread out.
Based on our output, our planet is only visible for 4-lightyears. Our civilization would be overlooked by type-1, type-2 and type-3 civilizations because they would have nothing to gain from our current situation.
The great filter may mean we are one of few civilizations to have advanced to this point. We will need to learn more about the mechanism of action of the great filter and how to avoid certain doom from this filter. This was a fascinating video, and it's a good introduction to the Fermi Paradox.
