The Richat Structure, also known as Guelb er Richât (Arabic), is a conspicuous circular geological formation in the Adrar Plateau of the Sahara, near Ouadane in west-central Mauritania, Northwest Africa. rt signifies feathers in the local dialect and is known as tense in Arabic. Tagense is the circular aperture of the leather bag used to gather water from nearby wells.
It is a 40-kilometer-diameter eroded geological dome that exposes sedimentary rock in strata that appear like concentric rings. Inside, igneous rock is visible, as are beautiful rhyolites and gabbros that have experienced hydrothermal alteration, as well as a central megabreccia. The tower also houses extraordinary collections of Acheulean archaeological artifacts. It was chosen as one of the first hundred geological heritage sites designated as having the highest scientific significance by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).
