In this publication I have the pleasure of writing about the National Flower of Venezuela, ORCHID THE QUEEN OF FLOWERS. It was in the year 1951, specifically on May 23rd, that by official decree it was named National Flower. It is popularly known as "Flor de Mayo" due to the festivities that take place in that month adorning the Cross of May (Cattleya mossiae).
Its scientific name Orchidaceae, is located in the states of Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo, Yaracuy, Lara, Portuguesa and throughout the Andean zone of Venezuela. Its preferred habitat is El Avila, north of Caracas. In Venezuela there are about 1,000 species, according to the publication made in 1964 by Dr. Ernesto Foldats, Botanist of the UCV, among them are one of the rarest species in the world since they belong to the orchid family Epidendroideae.
The orchid family is the largest in the plant kingdom, (approximately 30,000 species and 800 genera).

En esta publicación tengo el placer de escribirles de la Flor Nacional de Venezuela, **ORQUIDEA LA REINA DE LAS FLORES**. Fue en el año 1.951 específicamente el 23 de mayo que por decreto oficial le nombraron Flor Nacional. Es conocida popularmente como “Flor de Mayo” debido a las festividades que se realizan en ese mes adornando La Cruz de Mayo (Cattleya mossiae).
Su nombre científico Orchidaceae, se localiza en los estados Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo, Yaracuy, Lara, Portuguesa y en toda la zona andina de Venezuela. Su hábitat preferido es El Ávila, al norte de Caracas. En Venezuela se encuentran unas 1.000 especies, según la publicación realizada en 1964 por el Dr. Ernesto Foldats, Botánico de la UCV, dentro de ellas se encuentran una de las especies más raras del mundo ya que las misma pertenecen a la familia de las orquídeas Epidendroideae.
La familia de las orquídeas es la más grande del reino vegetal, (aproximadamente 30.000 especies y 800 géneros).
