Contest Alert! 3 Days Without Electricity

I live in Okara, one of the smallest cities of Punjab. Loadshedding in some areas of the city is insane as compared to the other areas. Light goes for 4 to 5 hours straight when temperature is extremely high. The area where i live is near Okara cantt , loadshedding here is less as compared to previous year. When it used to go after every hour, especially in Ramadan.

However, loadshedding in Ramadan remains intact each year

These days we are facing 3hours of loadshedding in a day. Which would increase according to weather condition.

Apart from that, on every Wednesday our light goes for the whole day. In summers, it is quite frustrating to bear loadshedding for so long.

Apart from episodic loadshedding, electric shutdown happens once in every season.

In winters, we say it's the best opportunity to detox and spend more time out in nature.

In summers, the idea of power break down sends chill down the spine(in anger).

What activities would you do if there is an electric failure in your country for 3 days?

When light goes off we disconnect from electronic and digital world. Only then we realise that we have real people around us in the form of family and friends.

I'll spend my time with my family because I'll have no choice left. We'll gossip, talk about the childhood memories, or play riddles to kill the time.

My mother says, in their time women didn't sit like an idle in the home. Instead, they were doing something like sewing clothes, doing and learing embroidery, or simply peeling off the garlic in their spare time.

So, my Mother made me pill off the garlic today, as we had 7hours of loadshedding straight.

If power breakdown happens in summer, I'll spend my day eating cold things to minimize the heat like: gola ganda, khoye wali kulfi, chilled shakes and milk soda.

When i was in my teens we would spend most of our day eating these things, while holding a hand fan in another hand.

It's surely gonna remind us the era of Zardari in Pakistan. When power breakdown was so common that every person had known the timetables of loadshedding.

In winters, electric breakdown will provide an opportunity to avoid distractions(like tv and cellphones) to read books.
Also weather is calm and cool in winters, so a person can read with their quilt on and a lit candle on the side table.

Also a cup of tea would not harm anyone

If not reading, a more effortless thing to do will be sleeping. I love falling asleep while listening to old folksong and qawalis.

I'll prefer reading and sleeping in winters.

In summers, if a power breakdown occurs, only thing i would like to do is curse the kelectric. It comes natural in summers, we have got this training in zardari's rule.

We are left with less facility to use the power sources. We can't turn the fans on as much as we want, which means we can't sleep altogether.

No other activities feel tempting, everybody is just frustrated in summer's power breakdown.

What are the major problems or issues that you will face in three days electric failure?

The issue of water is equally faced during electric power down in summers and winters.

In summers the situation becomes worse because we need more water for hydration and hygiene. Where would a person get a chance to take shower multiple times in a day?

When electric shutdown happens, we refil our water tank using generator( petrol as a fuel). As you guys know petrol prices is already sky-rocketing, it becomes more difficult to use generator during longer electric shutdowns.

In my area we also face gas loadshedding so it's not possible to run a generator on gas.

My taya Abu's house also has a pump which runs on solar panels. In difficult times like these we also take their help to refil our tank.

Our internet device is switched to the ups, whose battery can't run for a long duration straight. We have taken the internet connection from another house, and if it's not our ups's bettery goes down it's gonna be their.

It becomes difficult to do the online study and work.

Once an electric shutdown happened in my online exams. I had to submit my assignment when internet refused to work. I started crying thinking what would my teacher do to me? Would she cut my numbers? Would she even accept my assignment after the time deadline is over?

Then we begged our neighbours and connected my phone to their WiFi and submitted my work.

Thankfully my teacher was too kind to understand my situation.

We also face gas loadshedding which becomes severe in winters. They would only give it for few minutes and then it vanishes in thin air.

To tackle these situation we use compressor which runs on electricity. If the battery of the ups is gone we are left with no choice instead to cook on coal.

However, we make sure not to empty out our ups batteries. But when it's summers and Sun is shining with his full glory you can't resist to switch on the fans.
