Good day ladies and gentlemen of this wonderful community it is pleasure to be making this post here and to be part of this contest.

This contest is totally going to be educative and breathtaking as I have personally have made my research and is standing here to share these information with you and answer the following questions and points.

1. What do you know about Radiations? Tell me about some radioactive sources.

2. Give a few benefits of the radiations.

3. Enlist some harmful effects of radiations of different types.

4. Do our electronic devices (phones, laptops, tablets, or other screens) emit radiation? What should we do to protect our health?

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT RADIATIONS? TELL ME ABOUT SOME RADIOACTIVE SOURCES.

Radiation as taught to me in senior secondary school in my physics class, is a phenomenon that can be explained or defined as the ability of substances or materials to emit or transmit energy through vacuum, space or any medium in form of electromagnetic waves or particles.

Radiation is a natural occurrence that takes place in different forms, which are majorly two.

Namely; Ionizing radiation and Non- ionizing radiation and under one of these forms there is an example of radiation that happens every day in our daily and this is the sunlight.

Sunlight contains or better still gives off radiation in the form of visible light and ultraviolet radiation.

Non- ionizing radiation: This type of radiation do not have or carry enough energy to cause ionization of radioactive materials, just as the name implies.

But unlike this the Ionization radiation: is that type of radiation that causes strong bonded electrons to be be emitted and leave atoms.

TELL ME ABOUT RADIOACTIVE SOURCES

Radioactive materials or substances that perform ionizing form of radiation are the ones that makes up radioactive sources.

One common feature of these radioactive materials is that they have very unstable atomic nucleus.

Natural Radioactive Sources;

Uranium atom and Thorium atom: These radioactive materials are found naturally on the Earth's surface and when enough energy is incident on them they emit and give off different types of radiation like;

•Alpha particles

•Beta particles and

•Gamma radiation.

Radon Gas: This is bye product of a series of radiation reaction of Uranium atom to form radon which is also another source of radiation.

Artificial Radioactive Sources;

Under this section we have radioisotopes which formed by bombarding stable atomic nucleus with neutron.

GIVE A FEW BENEFITS OF RADIATION

Yes, radiation presents a lot of benefits and advantages when used moderately and a few of it's benefits can be noticed in different aspects of the human lives;

In Medicine And Treatment

Radiation has helped and been the most brutal force in battling a very brutal illness known as cancer.

As we all know cancer falls under the terms of illness called terminal illness but with radiation and right circumstances it is possible for doctors who specialize in this field to provide and offer treatment to their suffering patients.

Through radiation therapy doctors can target and kill cancerous cells form in the body.

That is not all, also in X-ray another type of radiation, doctors can get a clear image of the bones a patient who shows symptoms of a fracture, to know for what it is and how serious or severe the injury might be.

Also another marvellous application is that couples can now know the gender of their babies before they are born.

They can know any issue wrong with the fetus, that is very wonderful.

Radiation has proven to be very effective to be used to sterilize medical blades before and after and surgical procedure.

ENLISTS SOME HARMFUL EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF RADIATIONS

Above we just listed the benefits and advantages of radiation, but we know no one thing is truly good and does not have a bad or a disadvantage.

Radiation when overly exposed to the human body can cause a lot of damages which includes;

Cancer

Premature aging

DNA destruction

Balding

Genetic Mutation

Poisoning

X-ray can cause DNA destruction, too much exposure to UV rays cause skin cancer and darkening of the skin.

Radon gas causes poisoning to humans.

DO OUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PHONES, TABLETS, LAPTOPS AND OTHER SCREENS ) EMIT RADIATION? WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO PROTECT OUR HEALTH?

Yes our electronic devices which includes; Laptops, Phones, Tablets emits and gives off radiation and just like any other radiation it can be harmful when there is too much exposure to the human body.

So how do we protect our selves from these dangers, you can if you take note of the following points;

Every new electronic devices in it's packet has an instruction manual as part of it's package and my advice is that you read every part of it adhere to the instructions.

You can also try to minimize direct contact with your phone, like when making calls in private you can use the handsfree option or a earpods or earphones when in public.
