The cosmos ecosystem is an internet of sovereign blockchains, with the cosmos hub serving as a layer 0 protocol; a foundation in which various sovereign blockchains can be built and interact seamlessly with each other.
Officially launched in 2016 although it's origin can be traced to the launch of Tendermint in 2014, which is a core contributor to the network founded by co-founders Jae Kwon, Zarko Milosevic and Ethan Buchman. Cosmos has become a foundation to which a lot of blockchains are built on. Consisting of Tendermint, cosmos hub and IBC.
The cosmos ecosystem is home to over 262 appchains on it's network with them being interopable, ensuring Inter Blockchain Communication (IBC). This various appchains built on cosmos can serve as sovereign blockchains where decentralized applications (dapps) are built on.
ATOM it's native token, used for the general running of the network and ensuring it's security.
ATOM tokens are minted through a hybrid Proof-of-stake algorithm, which require validators to stake their tokens in order to verify transactions and secure the network.
Having a fixed total supply of 203,121,910 and about 260,906,513 tokens are in circulation.
Cosmos is currently ranked 19th on coinmarketcap crypto rankings, with a current market cap of $3.7 billion and current price of $13, it's listed on major crypto exchanges like: Binance, OKX, Mexc etc.
Cosmos believes that sovereignty and interoperability are the two key ingredients for building an open ecosystem of #blockchains that can scale for mass adoption.
