Living in the United Arab Emirates I developed a love relationship with the desert. Growing up I use to think that the desert was this scary, lifeless place. It couldn’t be far from the truth. The desert is not only gorgeous but full of life.
As I live in the Middle East, I have been traveling around the region. I had the opportunity to visit Jordan and on that trip, I spend 3 days in one of the most beautiful deserts in the world, Wadi Rum.
We stayed at a genuine Bedouin camp. They were going to provide shelter, water, and food so we didn’t have to worry about that. We visit in December, I knew the days will be cold and the nights even colder. These are the main 5 things I packed for this trip to the desert:
- Comfortable shoes.
- Warm socks.
- The hottest coat I have.
- A solar charger.
- Some snacks, just in case.
In those 3 days, we got to experience how was to live a life in the middle of the desert. We woke up early in the morning to have a light breakfast. They had bathroom facilities, always very clean. The water was freezing so I took very short showers. After breakfast, we would hop on an old truck and head deep into the desert. They shared with us the most lovely places. We would spend most of the day out and go back to the camp in the evening to have the most delicious dinner. A BBQ that they have done by digging a hole in the ground.
We would take the truck to get deep into the desert but once we arrive at our destination a caravan of Camels will be waiting for us. We would hop on the back of the Camels and continue our adventure. Camels are the best mode of transportation in the desert. They can walk long distances without needing too much water or food.
I am glad we make the decision of spending those days at Wadi Rum, was a wonderful and humbling experience.
