My Understanding of Typography
Typography is essentially the practice of presenting text visually. It’s more than picking a font; it considers all aspects, including the shape, size, and position etc of each word. The intent of typography is to create beautiful visuals as well as to structure text for ease of understanding. The choice of font, space, and alignment can modify the entire effect of a design, which is why effective typography boosts the effectiveness of design.
It’s not solely regarding aesthetics (the visual beauty); it also acts as a means of communication. Doing typography correctly makes your message more effective and simpler to understand. Alternatively, if a font is so elaborate that you can’t understand the words, then no matter how gorgeous the design is, it’s futile. Therefore, the font size, style, and color should make reading easier, instead of complicating it.
Categories of Typefaces
First of all, I will define what exactly a typeface is. From reading this contest announcement post by our instructor @lhorgic, I learned that a typeface is something that determines the design or style of all fonts. In essence, a typeface determines the design of each letter and their combined look. For example, when you notice Arial or Times New Roman, they are different typefaces because their design styles are distinct. Moreover, a single typeface may include several fonts, including bold, italic, or regular. In simpler words, think of a typeface as a complete family, and fonts as the individual members of that family.
In my post, I’ve chosen following three typefaces to discuss:
- Display Typeface
- Monospaced Typeface
- Handwritten Typeface
These styles are very ornate and written in larger sizes, usually intended for headlines or poster design. The aim is to draw attention. Below is an example of the “Ample Display” font of this typeface.
In this typeface, all letters achieve identical spacing, no matter their size. This style is regularly applied for coding and typewriters. Below is an example of the “Courier Prime” font of this typeface.
These fonts mimic handwriting and are regularly used in casual and informal designs. Below is an example of the “Dancing Script” font of this typeface.

¡Holaaa amigo!🤗
