Street Photography Challenge Week - 14 | "Capture, Click, Compete!"

This was a picture that I captured during one of the vibrant traditional Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka, Kandy Esala Perahera(Procession). Esala Perahera is held annually in July-August to pay homage to the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha which placed at the Temple of Tooth Relic that is considered as the central epitome of Buddhists. This festival last for a week and proceeded by various rituals that have been practicing since ancient past.

Parading The Relic Casket affixed to Maligawa Elephant (the elephant trained by the temple to carry the casket) begins with the whip cracking as per announce the commencement of the perahera. One the other hand it is used to symbolise the sound of thunder. Then follows the fire ball dancers symbolising the lightening flashes with thunder. It is believed that this perahera procession also adds the people blessings from the God of Rain and gift with the adequate rain for cultivation and other purposes.

Afterwards the perahera proceeds with numerous mesmerising dancing performance that are unique to Sri Lanka. And the picture illustrates the exotic art of Kandiyan dancing which is beautified with the traditional "Gatabera" drum playing. The significance of these dancing troupes is, only those who belong to the dancing clans of those lineages that have been performing since the origin of this perahera tradition only have the privilege to perform in this sacred festival.

Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the greatest festivals that everyone of you should witness at least once in your life. I would like to invite you all to visit Sri Lanka and experience this cultural extravaganza.
