Despite the deep differences, Republicans and Democrats are uniting in the face of social networking giants

US Senator Mark Warner said on Monday that he had spoken to President Joe Biden's employees about Article 230, a law that protects technology companies, and expects his recent legislation to reform the law, which would win Republican approval.

The bill will make US social media companies such as Google, Twitter, and Facebook more accountable for cyber-stalking, harassment and discrimination issues on their platforms by amending Section 230 that protects tech platforms from liability for user-posted content.

In February, Warner, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, introduced a bill with Democratic Senators Amy Klobuchar and Mazi Hirono called the Safe Technology Act.

"I have hope and expect that our legislation will become bipartisan," Warner said, without elaborating. He added that he had spoken to the Biden staff and that they were interested in having a discussion on Section 230, noting that the White House was still developing its broader position on technology policy.

There are several pieces of legislation from the Democrats to reform Section 230 that are in circulation in Congress. Several Republican lawmakers are also pushing separately to repeal the law entirely due to technology platform decisions to modify content.

The chief executives of Google, Twitter and Facebook previously said the law is essential to freedom of expression on the Internet, and it gives them the tools to strike a balance between preserving freedom of expression and modifying content.
